What's up with this?

I'm a gun idiot.

Does this have all the noise making parts of a gun?

The slides and dry fire clicking and magazine loading?

I've been thinking of building an AR-15 for a while. If I find a pawn shop that will do the transfer what do I do at that point?

Also, for someone who's never built a gun before, what's the difficulty of putting one of these together?

The receiver would have to be shipped to the FFL, and you pick it up there (after they complete the paperwork and charge you the transfer fee, usually $20-30ish).

If you buy a complete upper assembly, like this, it wouldn't be hard at all. I considered that one, but I'm not sure if I want to go without a forward assist or dust cover. You can also get a whole rifle for $580 (though that specific deal is OOS).

As stated it's pretty easy, place your order putting the FFL store name and address as the ship to, call the store and have them fax a copy of their FFL to this company, if my experience holds true it should ship out the same day if you place the order in the morning. Then when it arrives you go pick it up and pay the transfer fee.

As for difficulty, anyone with a few basic tools (hammer, punch, screw drivers) can put a stripped lower together in 45 minutes or less, that said this is a complete lower that is already assembled, if you buy a complete upper it's just pulling 2 pins out, snapping the upper on, and pushing the pins back in, no tools required...it couldn't get any easier.

The upper linked above isn't bad but I don't think it comes with the bolt carrier group or a charging handle...for a complete upper with those items try this LINK, a great company and a great product, that page has the bolt carrier already selected you just add the charging handle for $18 (total $408) and have it shipped to your home. If you want iron sights though add the MBUS for $50 more or you can order a scope from somewhere else...

Edit: Forgot to add, you'll need to order a magazine or 10 to go with it, Magpul PMags are pretty much the best and can be found for $15 or less shipped each

Were you referring to the one I posted?
Description:
Midway USA offers DPMS AR-15 Flattop Upper Assembly 5.56x45mm NATO 1 in 9" Twist 16" Bull Barrel Chrome Moly Matte with GlacierGuard Handguard. This drop-in upper will attach to virtually any standard AR-15 lower assembly. Comes complete with charging handle, bolt and bolt carrier assembly.
It doesn't have a shell deflector, forward assist or dust cover, but it does have its guts. There's this one too (unfortunately the price has gone up since that was posted - link).

Yes I was and sure did miss that in the description...those are nice deals as well, missing a front sight but most people go with some optics anyway..hmm, almost makes me wish I had ordered that second one there instead of the PSA, but only an $8 difference and I do like the 1/7 twist over the 1/9...oh well too late for that anyway

EDIT: Also it looks like both of those uppers are lacking the chrome lined barrel of the PSA, doesn't effect function but sure helps with cleaning

Nice catch.

From a brief bit of research, it looks like chrome-lined barrels can be ever so slightly less accurate (to an insignificant degree, at least for the vast majority of shooters) than regular barrels - but the upside is the ease of cleaning and they'll also last a lot longer.

Or you can just get a stainless barrel in the first place and have the best of both worlds.

Very true but for the cost a chrome lined barrel makes the most sense, to me at least...but that's why we have options

I have a stainless barrel in the AR I have now, but are they as easy to clean as the chrome lined ones?

wow, there is way too much stuff for these guns. a guy could kill a week just looking at different uppers. i have been looking at some off and on for a couple days now and i am no closer to finding one from when i started looking. all i really plan do with this gun is plink and maybe predator hunt. i dont need the handle or the sights, i will go with some decent optics, maybe a green laser and/or weapon light for fun. i dont want to really skimp and buy a pos, but then again i dont want to get something insane and strap it to a $99 lower, but hey then again, that can be upgraded in the future too. boy i should have never clicked on this thread.

Hahahahaha...welcome to the world of AR's.

This is what I have now - I was going to get one of these lowers and build another gun, but now I'm thinking I may be better off to just get a flattop upper for the gun I already have..I don't really need two.

Haha...ain't that the truth! Best bang for buck right now I keep going back to PSA, I bought the upper I linked above for $422 shipped for this lower, add the $112+$30 xfer for the lower and a PMag for $15 that comes to about $580 for the basics which is just insanely cheap for an AR.

Psshh...everyone needs at least two I've still got a spare stripped lower I need to figure out what to build with since I ended up ordering this one for the wife, think I'll go a different caliber for it though, the FN 5.7 upper looks really attractive. And if you're just wanting to replace your upper consider PSA (I'm starting to sound like I work for them), their's is only $99 HERE. Also from what I understand there's some special tools you need to remove the barrel to change it over and it can be a pain

Oh and here's the obligatory pic of mine, have a Primary Arms red dot on it as well as MBUS irons

PSA has been having supplier problems so their stock has been dwindling lately. A lot of the good stuff (especially in complete uppers) is OOS or missing completely from the page, and has been that way for months. Not their fault, but I'm going to have to look somewhere else to get the quad rail stainless setup I want.

This. Can someone recommend a good inexpensive upper to go with this lower?

Pickings have been slim but when they've got it their price generally can't be beat...

There have been a couple listed but here's the cheapest and my personal choice...LINK

I just ordered one for this lower and it came to $422 shipping included (you have to be sure to add the charging handle), if you want a rear sight be sure to select it too, the MBUS is $50 more or you can just buy optics later, Primary Arms has some for very reasonable prices

Also you'll need a magazine or 4

Not sure if I should start a new thread for this little gem but you can get 30rd PMags for $11.98 shipped from Botach Tactical using coupon code "slickmag" (20% off order)...here's a LINK to the standard ones but they also have the Maglevel which end up being $14.38 shipped with the same code

It's pricey at 750, but this upper has everything I'd want.

Unless I could find the same type of setup with a stainless barrel, partial quad rail, AND a piston system... I think this is about as great as I could want.

In regards to this upper would someone mind telling me what the Bolt Carrier Group is and if I'd want it, as well as the difference between the charging handles and whether I should get a handguard? Also, if I plan to get optics should I still get one of their sight options?

Thanks.
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers/psa-16-m4-upper.html

You can not fire the weapon without a bolt.

Optics are a fun option, but some good flip up iron sights are good too. It all depends on how far you plan on shooting from.

edit: also, the handguard is just a matter of preference. Check out the alternate pictures to see some of the other options. You can google the other ones.

I think your questions were mostly answered except the difference in charging handles...which is one has an oversized latch release, personally I think it looks goofy and there's really no need for it, if you want to see them to compare for yourself click the AR15 menu at the top then select upper parts, they're both there...also you have to have a hand guard (that's the round cover over the barrel you hold onto), which color or style is up to you, the standard is black and round like their picture, mine above has the MOE version in dark earth color, both can be had in other colors as well, the choice is yours and can always be changed later if you find something you like better...my wifes is going to be pink

That is pretty sexy:wub:...though if I ever went with a stainless barrel I would want it fluted, it just looks meaner I think

We ordered 5 of these, and one is mine. Now I just have to figure out when I should actually get the upper.

No time like the present

Mine is scheduled to arrive at my dealer on Monday, still waiting on my upper to ship from PSA but it usually takes them a week to assemble it after the order is placed so shouldn't be too much longer. Now I need to figure out what to do with a spare aluminum lower I have sitting in my safe
