Complete soundproofing of wall possible?!

Preface:
I'm a little crazy. I get anxious about future problems that may not happen at all. BUT if I can imagine an out to a worst case scenario I can get over it.

The story:
I'm moving into a house in a couple months, my first house. One of the main reasons is to avoid all the noise that pollutes apartment complexes. I value my sleep a lot (probably too much) and grew up out in the boonies where it was dead quiet at night.

OK, I use earplugs all the time so do not recommend them.

Worst case scenario:
The neighbors dog barks like crazy all through the night. I have a fairly big lot (big for the area, .33 acres) and am probably 50 feet from said dog.

The question!
Is it possible to completely soundproof my bedroom if need be? Would a second drywall layer on the back wall and fancy-shmancy soundproof window plus earplugs make it so I wouldn't hear even the loudest dog?

I know this is a dumb question, and I know I'll get flamed. But it helps me sleep at night (literally) to know that if it does happen, and the owner is unreasonable, I have an out other than moving (albeit expensive).

Thanks ATOT!!!!

(8 years here and not even 2k posts, pathetic I know...)

Where are you moving to?

I'm looking for a nice town to set up my air horn testing facility.

Yea, its doable.

Adding another fiberglass insulated stud wall and hanging a green glue sandwich (5/8inch drywall + Green Glue + 5/8 drywall) should keep out most of the noise. They also make things for windows that basically create a dead air pocket to kill sound transmission. Add a solid core door to the room and you should be good to go.

Sounds like a plan to me.

It's certainly possible to soundproof enough to block out the type of noise you're desribing.

Can I join you with my subwoofer testing business?

Low freqs penetrate walls so much nicer than higher freqs

I use in-ear headphones and a radio talk show on low volume to drown out any other noise. It works very well for me.

Install dual pane windows if your house doesn't already have them. When we swapped out my bed room's single pane window for a dual pane the difference was amazing.

If the dog is barking ask the neighbors to control their pet. If not call animal control. In most places/states there are rules/laws against that.

But to make a house sound proof will cost a good deal of money. better to find the noise and control it then the other way around.

How much did that cost if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah I don't think it will come to that, I hope not. Hell, like I said, I don't even live there yet! But when we toured the place one time (out of three) there was an old basset hound next door getting really angry when I was in the backyard.

The place has an HOA, maybe if there is a problem I can go thru them to get problem solved if it happens.

I'm just having buyer remorse because I signed the mortgage papers last night...

The neighbors would probably chip in for this so they won't have to hear those weird moans when you masturbate.

That's an idea. The low bark of a manly basset hound really gets me going!

We did our whole house with retrofit windows about 5 years ago. Retrofit windows are cheaper than replacement windows because mount into the existing window frame. I think it cost around 4000 for 9 windows and a sliding glass door. If you are just going to do one window it's pretty cheap, I think the retro fit windows at home depot around 200 dollars. Also if your going with the retro fit windows they are very easy to install, it's definitely a DYI job, we paid to have them installed and there was nothing to it.

bug the neighbor then go to the ciy
sound proofing is a lot of trouble and possibly less effective than youd want. like extra layer of drywall, triple pane of window glass...
major stuff
but yes even dual pane makes quite a difference in basic noise control.
but i'm still not sure it would muffle a dog.

No, not afforable. A second layer of rock would not do much if anything. Ususally the wall it not the problem it is the openings in it that permit sound.

I have been involved with some pretty sophisticated sound proofing systems at work and they have been very expensive and less than effective.

For drywall, look into this stuff. I ran across it while watching a reno show (Holmes on Homes) and the stuff looks pretty insane. The episode they had it in revolved around soundproofing a townhouse that was poorly built for noise between units. Didn't discuss anything about noise from outside, so can't really recommend anything specific there. Just make sure any opening in the wall is extremely well sealed.

Is there not some kind of insulation type material one could shove down in the walls that would do this job?

..interesting. should there be an air/insulated gap between the new 2x4's and the back wall??

Nope, it's not possible. Soundproofing hasn't been invented yet. Find another place where the neighbors don't have dogs. Or stereos. Or kids for that matter.
