component cables vs rca cables?

id like to know if component cables are the same thing as rca cables? what i mean is physically the cables themselves are they different? ie.. ethernet vs coaxial is different.

like can i use good quality rca cables to do a connections for component inputs and outputs? or do i have to buy specifically component cables for component imput out puts.

Sure, you can use them. I've used them in a pinch, they'll work alright.

In some cases the RCA cables will carry lower quality signal. Different cables are engineered to carry different quality. Name the media you wish to transport and the plugs that are available to you and we can likely let you know the best medium to carry the media. A good example is why use RCA cable to carry video if SVGA plugs are available.

I think he's saying that he has to connect a component out to a component in, but he wants to use 'rca' cables to carry the signal (rather than the MUCH more expensive 'component' cables). It *should* work for a short run, although cheap RCA (ie, 'composite') cables may not have enough bandwidth for all HDTV signals.

yeah thats what i mean, So i should buy componet cables for component items rather than using regular rca. basically i asked this is because i was gonna buy a 10 pack of AR brand rca cables, and though i could use those to connect it from my dvd to my hdtv as well as every other video audio inputs/outputs in my system.

any other comments greatly appreciated.

Well I used them in a "pinch" and they work, but really, you only need to buy them once, get some good component cables (no you don't need Monster Cables) You use component for the superior signal, don't cripple it with poor cables. Usually those A/V cables have pretty weak audio cabling at the very least.
