I want to hook up a dvd player to my hdtv. they both have component video hookups. my question is, do i need to buy component cables? or can i just use composite cables that are gold/shielded?

You need component cables, for sure. Composite was pre-svideo, and is total crap. Anyways, only Component can pass a progressive signal anyways, as far as I know.

He's using component, he just wants to know if he can use plated composite cables. Which he should be able to do without much loss, but when 3ft of high-quality plated component is ten bucks, why not?

You're saying he's plugging the composite cable into component ports?

first of all, thx for the quick replies. i went ahead and tried some gold plated composite cables i had lying around. the dvd player worked fine but the difference between the movie in s-video and this was not very different. (the composite cable/component connection looked a little brighter...) from what you guys are saying, i should just drop the $15 and get the component cables...but is it really going to show a noticeable difference?

the dvd player is rather old too, its a Sony DVP-s560d, so i know its not progressive scan. so old, i can't even find it on the sony web site!!

Oh, well, you need to get a progressive scan DVD player... unless your TV has a built in line doubler.

if its not progrssive, dont bother.

some players s-video outputs are better than non-progressive component.

Your DVD player doesn't support progressive scan - or it's not listed there on that link.

Edit - Damn, your TV has DVI though. Nice. May I suggest an HTPC?

HTPC?

I know of the DVI, but I read that DVI connections arent noticeable for 4:3 Tube Tv's. plus, this tv and dvd player are at my parents house and they're not really looking for a new dvd player. however, i'm really tempted to get a progressive scan dvd and take advantage of this tv, its pretty sweet.

please don't waste that nice TV by using a composite connection. You should notice a definite difference PRIMARILY in color separation and accuracy with the component cables.

Conventional wisdom on the HT boards is that you will prob not notice a difference in PQ moving from a non progressive DVD player to a progressive one in a tv with a 40" screen... with a larger tv, yes, definitely, but it depends on the TV also. Sony HDTVs are notable for their great line doublers (CINEMOTION) - I assume that tv has it also.

I would not buy a new DVD player anytime soon unless mine stopped working...HD DVD format has been approved and is around the corner...
