I hear that the Geforce 6200TC and Radeon X300 are not very good. As a last resort I can always replace my wife?s old Gigabyte FX5700 256mb VIVO card with a newer $100+ one and install that in her sister?s computer.

i'm sure some of those dell x800s will be showing up on ebay soon

it looks like the xfx 6600 gddr2 doesn't suck down much powre

thread at fw seems to think the PS is rated at 250. depending on its quality it could be anything from barely able to power the 6600 to powering a 7800 gt. someone reported that putting a tv wonder in the system caused the computer not to boot and the PS to make a weird noise.

someone else reported playin CoD2 with the eyecandy turned way down

Thanks, I have an MSI 6600GT AGP in my kids HP with a stock 300W power supply that works great even though MSI recommends a minimum 350W PSU. Even the 6600 PCI-E's are still over $100 though. I am just worried that if the Presario sr1601nx has a 250W PSU I might have to pony up the time and money to replace it in addition to getting a new card. Can those who have this model give a look and post please.

Thanks OP. I read this thread just minutes before they opened at 9am and picked up the $500 laptop. For the price it's excellent. I was already shopping for a sub $600 laptop with a large screen so I can run basic things for and this was a perfect match.

Added a stick of PC2700 512MB SODIMM and I'm rockin'

They don't seem to be old wtih this NB and SB
Northbridge: ATI RS482
Southbridge: ATI SB400

I wonder is COmpaq just doesn't want o support 2 type of MB anymore.

asus has won the contract to manufacture HP and compaq systems or at least many lines of their systems.

they are manufactured wholly by asus. that is why there was a change.

the other company who used to do it did not make their own motherboards and used both MSI and asus.

if the power supply is atx 2.0 spec, it should have 22 amps on the 12v rail even for a 250 watt.

that would likely be able to power even a 7800 gtx.

if it is an atx 1.3 psu it will only have 16 amps on the 12v which is well not going to be good enough for a 7800 gtx, though woud be plenty for a 6600 or something assuming no other hardware was installed in the machine.

Thanks, I might have to open it up to check the PSU sticker the next time I am out there, but I don't want to spoil the suprise. Heck, I'll just tell her I'm checking to see if she has enough RAM. A 7800, yikes that cost more than the computer.

itll be a surprise all right
again from the side of the ps that was removed
+5v & +3.3v shall not exceed 165w
+5v and +12v shall not exceed 218w
max output power: 250w

well people can do what they want
i do
forsee some jokas looking like wile e coyote in the face when they electronics blow up
had to move a boss' data to a new system cause he thought there wasn't no harm in using a geforce mm 440se agp in an hp 185w max system
plugged in a usb card reader and in his words "it went poof! and now all it does is beep!!!"
hard head make a soft behind
above all else, don't let the smoke out of the back! it'll be done for sure then

it (the integrated video) should play most games, especially hl2 (not bothered to install yet)
currently plays gtasa, although having some audio issues
check the front page for a comparison of ati xpress 200 vs other integrated chipsets

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2427

it sounds to me like i am bashing the machine, so i would like to mention that it has an spdif out and it is extremely quiet...

Thanks for the advice unclebud. My laptop has the ati xpress 200 on board and it does alright with Star Wars Battlefront except when it has to render smoke or steam. Then the fps slow down.

Now I just need the $199 desktop deal to come back this Sunday since I am actually going to be staying a few miles from the nearest COMPUSA instead of the usual 200 miles away! My wifes little brother needs to upgrade from his AMD Athlon XP 2100, so a cheap Compaq SR1710 sans monitor would do nicely.

I got in on the $125 desktop and now I wish I had bought two.

XP Home upgrade alone costs $89, so for an extra $36 you get a case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, HD, keyboard and mouse!

I got a SR1710NX today at 249 out the door plus a 50mir. Comes out to 199 after all is said and done.

Upgraded the ram to 1gb, added a dvd burner and gave it to my parents after a fresh format and Nero install. It's pretty damn quick.

But I got scared when I checked the cpu clock and it said 994MHz instead of 2GHz. I was like WTF?! Then I found out they have some utility that lowers clock speed at idle, etc. Hahaha I got owned.

I picked up the machine this weekend. Pretty impressive, given the price. I wrote up a short review on AnotheR Sites' forum. To build this machine on your own, the hardware cost alone is well over $300 and OEM XP Home and Works by itself would run you about $150. Most of the other software on the machine was crap so I uninstalled it. I used it to replace my kids' machine (which I sold for $175, so the new PC cost me a net of $25 plus a couple of upgrades) and they are very happy with it. I went to CircuitCity the other day and picked up their $25AR 512MB stick of PC3200 and their $50AR ATI X300 PCI Express and it's now quite the decent system.

Getting the CPU to run full speed (2GHz) is as simple as right click on the desktop > properties > screen saver > power > and change the power scheme to home/office desk or something like that.

Again, decent machine, and given the price and decent components, I gave it a 9/10.
