You're so right. If the info had been in the ad I would have included it. And it is a bit discouraging to do all the work to post a list like this and then have people ask for information they could have looked up in the same amount of time. How nice it would be if they would get that info and post it here instead! -wishful rant over-

The DVD burner appears to be from Hi-Val. If you look at the stock number in the ad it leads to THIS

THe add shows $129-$20IR-$20MIR=$89. The regular price looks to be $179.

Judging by the speeds and supported formats of this drive, it sounds like it is either an Optorite or a Sony. My guess would be the Optorite.

It is not an Optorite. You can't assume that one DVD is another brand's rebadge simplly based on write and read speeds. Many DVD burners have the same speeds. This burner does not support HD-BURN so it is definitely not an Optorite. If you want a good burner I highly recommend the Optorite. I own a DD0203 and have been very glad to have it . Hi-Val means high value for CompUSA if they can get people to buy it. Although no one here needs any buying advice from anyone I would avoid this burner and get the Lite-On on sale at BB for $80 or so or the same drive from Office Depot for $89 I think. As fast as prices on dvd burners are falling I would wait and get one of the brand name 8x models.

Edit: Forgot to mention the NEC at NewEgg for $100. Also probably much better than the Hi-Val.

Is the Hi-Val DVD+/- R/RW dual drive the same as the IOmagic dual burner (Optorite)? It's the same company and www.hival.com doesn't even list DVD burners.

Get there at least 1 1/2 hours before the sale. Take a Lawn chair or cushion with you. Generally right when they open the door. Some emplyees are at the entrance asking if anyone wants certain high price items or the computers. They then give you a Slip for one so you don't get trampled. They then bring it out to you at the store computer area. The rest is a free for all.
