Anyone have experience with the Cruzer USB drives? This is an excellent price for 256MB 2.0 USB Drive (even though it is with rebates).

"But Optorite's "good" name is soiled now. LOL"

Yes, just like Lite-On when they let everybody rebadge their CD burners. The problem with outfits like BusLink, Cendyne, Pacific Digital and others is that they buy from anybody and everybody and as is the case with the rebadged CD burners you never knew what you were getting. If you were lucky you got a Lite-On, if you got almost anything else you might have had something not worth paying for. The Optorite DD0203 is a good burner and can be bought for as little as $102 currently listed on PriceWatch.com with NO REBATES. Optorite may in fact be supplying them with OEM drives, but I dispute that they are DD0203 models. They may use the same firmware chipset but the Optorite has HD-BURN and the Hi-Val or IOmagic does not. Being able to burn 1.4 GB data to a 700 MB CD-R is definitely a nice plus. Will Hi-Val still be here in a year, in two months? Look what happened to Cendyne. A lot of people got screwed out of rebates and warranty when they went under. It's obvious from the IOmagic website that they have other suppliers or they wouldn't state that their firmware only worked on some models. BTW- If you are buying anything from CarpUSA that has a rebate, make sure it doesn't get mailed to New Rochelle.

It does support HD-BURN, read the support forum. I already suggested that. And it is an OptoRite DD0203. Read the support forum and ask support guy there if you still don't believe it.

Is it safe to assume that the DVD-R media is terrible? I have had bad luck with Kypermedia so I spent the extra money and got Memorex media and it worked so much better.

Strange that they would not mention that on IOmagic's website. If it is the DD0203 then this is a good deal, except for the rebate part. Just buy the Optorite for the extra few bucks and forget about waiting 3 to 6 months on a rebate from CarpUSA, and forget about the lines and mad crowds.

I have a 128MB Cruzer and it works well. Win2K & XP recognizes it right away and the transfer speed seems reasonable. Unfortunately, I don't really have a basis for comparison other than a 3 year old Lexar media reader/writer, which the Cruzer is quite a bit faster than (at least in the USB 2.0 ports that I have). Can't give you any real numbers though :frown: Just touchy-feely subjective "seems quite a bit faster" kind of stuff.

EDIT:
BTW, the $29.99 price for the 256MB is the same price I paid for the 128MB one just a month ago (I had a rebate also). So it's definitely a NICE price. But if the last CompUSA 6 hr sale is any indication, good luck getting one (and getting out of the store alive, or at least with all your limbs).

Another worthy item:

Seiko Inklink2 $19.99 ($99.99 - $50IR - $30 MFR MIR). This is FAR if you purchase it with a Viewsonic V36 at $199.99AR. (284455)

$20 if you don't purchase it with the PDA is pretty good. I'm going to get one and I'll see how the image upload to my PDA goes.

The notebook DOES look hot. My eyes passed over it first. Thanks for pointing it out. Graphics are provided by "ATI Mobility Radeon". Now I have to go look and see which of the various 6900 Radeon Pro SE parts this REALLY compares to...

ROFL. I can't believe there are Optorite fanboys already. I never even heard of Optorite until this duel format burner came out a few months back with HD Burn. I wouldn't make them out to be the next lite-on until they come out with more products and actually prove themselves.

I've heard people mention certain burners like HiVal and I/O Magic being "Optorites"? Funny I thought that Optorite was the same type of company as Hival and I/O Magic in that they actually use "Sanyo guts" in their burners. Maybe I'm way off base and uninformed, but that's what I've come to believe.

Now with all that I've said don't think I'm saying that Optorite is a bad product because I'm sure it is not. A friend of mine has one and seems to like it. I just am not ready to put Optorite at the top of my "high end" list.

Well After work today I figured I would drive by comp usa to pick up that $29.99 wireless router they have. I saw this post and the $599 laptop deal. I managed to talk the entire place into cracking the vault and selling me a laptop at the original price. With confirmation, they are allowing me to go there between the sale hours tomorrow and get my $100 instant rebate credit and the application for the $300 rebate. The total was a bit over $1000 and I am psyched. And don't forget, if the deal goes sour or I find better I still have 14 days to shop and return it for a FULL REFUND
So in this boat, I see myself as a winner. As long as the rebate comes back to me i'll be a happy man. One of the rebates is directly from Compaq so that is for sure. And the comp usa one should come. I have faith.
So this is a lesson to be learned, forget the 6 to 12 sale. Go there the night before, find a worker that looks hungry for a sale, and magic happens. The store I shopped at in CT had 24, now only 23 left. So good luck on all of the goodies.
I even jumped on that Dell Axis handheld pc at midnight last night so that is a gamble. Atleast one of these deals is rock solid with the product in front of me
Hey, maybe i'll put this thing up on ebay tonight and sell it off...who knows. As long as in the end I am up i'm a happy camper.
Good Luck Everyone !!!

BTW, unlike BB, CrapUSSR (usually since one of my local CrapUSSR stores has a greedy b&ttl1ck as a manager) doesn't PM if you return/rebuy... since it's a "special event" or "one-time sale." Basically, they have the right to refuse anything.

Then I would just tell them to keep it and credit my card back
It's worth the gamble. But at my store these guys were cool. They even offered other sale items to me. I can't spend more right now though. Christmas is here and must save to buy others all the gifts. Damn ! I should have bought some deals and gave them away as gifts
Oh well.
Good Luck

Be sure and check on-line. Even when the ads say "IN STORE ONLY", they often will be matched at the stores website.
