"You guys think those imac and sony laptops, etc. are only marked up 5-10% at compusa?"

Uhhh I dont know what you buddy has told you but I have seen the margin printouts on software, laptops and desktops.

40-70% markup on software? ha! find me a good first run game with that markup and I will be all over it.

Comp. WILL be loosing money on these with this sale

1-5% markups? Right......

It can be a decent deal on items with set prices such as iMacs maybe, but most of the stuff their is overpriced like hell. I remember seeing a monitor for like $450 there that was $250 online. And even if they were actually losing money, it doesn't matter, cuz you're probably still paying more than you would at other places

Um, what the heck are you trying to say?

Not to insult anyone on the forum...but if you think any retail business runs on 10% gross margins you either suck at math or have no economic/business knowledge.

10% is still cool...but compusa ain't loosin' no money.

I agree with Mini. You don't have to be an econ major to figure this one out.

I used to work the computer shows in Pomona, CA and I can tell you that CompUSA has a major markup on their software. People can buy most new games and apps at the shows in full retail packaging for ½ as much as B&M pricing. I doubt the ma and pa stores get as good a discount as the national chains do from the manufacturers. Computer stuff doesn't work like the fashion industry with outlet stores (I wish it did, hehe would be buying 21" Sony's left and right)

Not to say that CompUSA has no right to do so. Afterall, they offer the convenience and protection of a national chain. I have to wait 2 to 3 weeks for those local computer shows

Software is usually safer because a good product won't depreciate that much, but you end up having inventory for crappy software that will never sell.

No ads in local paper (CT) about this sale-anyone actually seen an ad?

Any decent MIR freebies? These are usually quite good during their anniversary sale.

ODD.. it's all over their website..
IF you click on advertised specials, they say there isn't a flyer or specials until 3/18 (the day after)..

So apparently its just normal prices..but with 10% off.. not sure why it isn't in a paper.

just got back from my local compusa (they open at 9am here on the east coast) and guess what...they have raised the price of the hp burner/rio mp-3 to $249.99

i asked the compusa drone...wasn't this 199 a few days ago...he said the new price went into effect friday morning...i said doesn't that kind of make the sale pointless...he said (and i still haven't figured this one out) "It's even a better value now."...how do you argue with that kind of logic ???

i forgot to bring my receipts for the 2 hp burner/rio's i bought last week...i'll go back this afternoon and see if i am able to get my $40 back (2 x 20)...technically the shouldn't give it to me since the package actually costs more now than when i buy it...but i called on thursday & talked to one of the customer service guys & he said it would be no problem...i'll post back here whatever happens

"there is like barely any markup on software"

So the same game that is $59.99 when it hits the shelves, and a week later is on sale for $19.99 doesnt have a markup?

Pluuueeeaasseeeeeeeeee...

Software is ALL the markup.

Everyone, Please screw your thinking heads back on! Your smarter than that!
Software is All about markup!

Think about this, how much does it cost YOU to burn a CD today? Less than a buck / disk!

You also don't have the fancy stamping equipment that can turn out a few thousand disks in an hour!

NO BUSINESS will run a sale and LOSE MONEY! TTTTHHHHIIIINNNNKKKKKK!

ok...went back to compusa to try & get the price adjustment for the hp/rio...customer service looked at me like i was crazy & said no...i asked to speak to the manager...she came out and i explained that their 14 day price guarantee seemed to apply here...the manager said no problem & started to make the change when she realized the price had gone up to 249 today...so no refund since the price after sale is still $25 more than what i paid a few days ago...oh well

Sometimes 10% is all you can get. Though CompUSA is big time suck, I did today buy a PowerMac G4/533 and saved $220. You generally don't see Macs discounted at all.

Too bad I couldn't take the receipt across the street to Best Buy for another 10% price-beater discount. They don't carry Apple.

So this is as good as it gets with Macs.

Huh?? A buck a disc? Comeon, you screw your thinkingcap on. When you copy a disk, what you are basically doing is stealing somebody else's work, of course it will cost you less. If I were to go out and steal somebody elses car, of course it would cost me less to get the car than the person I stole it from. Do you think it costs a buck a disc to the developers who pay salaries and utilities, rent etc. to make the game, and then a buck to the retailers who also pay salaries, utilities and whatnot to sell the game.

Something else to remember, the price the retailer pays to get the software is not the cost the retailer pays to sell the software. Salaries, advertising, utilities etc. are not free and are spread out among all sales so while the gross margain may indeed be high, the gross profit is probably much less so.

Get a clue or take an econ. class.

It's true that the hardware at compusa is only 1-5% markup, besides those new apple g4 733's which are over 10%. software is a little bit higher but definitely not even close to 40% in most cases. The place where they make their money is their "technology assurance program". the dumb extended warranties they sell on just about everything in the store even if it already has a manufacturer's warranty. they cost almost nothing and sell for quite a bit of money.
i work for this crappy place and look at the margin numbers all day long.

they make their money on those extended warranties. Its just to get people to go to the store, and see that its a nice store, so that maybe they will come back some day.
