If you live in the Torrance or greater Los Angeles area and are willing to make a drive, the CompUSA at the Torrance Del Amo Mall (the one next to Barnes & Noble and the Steak house), are having a going out of business sale-I'm talking 40-50% off computer components, Big screen TV's, video games, movie DVD's, Printers, Desktop computers, digital cameras, game peripherals (headsets, game controllers, etc), blank media, the whole she'bang. I don't know why they didn't advertise it-people like me would flock to the place like moth to a flame. I purchased 120mm fan filters, some video games, a new pair of Planttronics headphones ($19! Normally it goes for around $30), and some zip-ties. While I'm sad to see the guys going out of business, the event means great savings for the rest of us. Note that all sales are final-no returns.

You can get disgusting deals at Comp USA even when they aren't closing.

HDTV Upconverter - $29.99 Closeout
Former Retail price - $399.99
Ebay'd it and it sold for $225 - Priceless

I wish that Fry's would buy them out, so that we here on the East Coast could finally get in on the Fry's B&M deals ...

The Fry's model totally wouldn't work in any CompUSA store that I've ever seen. Not enough square footage. Fry's needs, like, the size of 2 Best Buy stores, at a minimum. Every Fry's that I've ever been to (3 in DFW and 1 in Las Vegas) you drive up to it and it's like "OMG IT'S HUGE!"

Why would I want to wait in a cattle corral type of checkout line, when I can go into CompUSA and be out in seconds? I'll pay more for CompUSA, if it means speedy checkout. Try going to a Fry's on the weekend. A bunch of cows waiting in line.

compusa has more overhead than sales, a store that boomed in the 80's, but went kaput in the 90's and beyond. internet stores like newegg will always beat b&m stores like compusa, circuit buy, best buy, etc. they don't have to pay rent for 100 chains nationwide or have tons of employees.

that being said, i too wish fry's would come to the east coast, the nearest compusa to me is 45 miles away, last time i bought some ink for a printer, the security guard who was standing no more than 20 feet from the cashier insisted on seeing my receipt, i told him no, since i just paid for this, there was no way he didn't see my in line, that was 2-years ago and the last time i ever went to compusa.

compusa won't be missed.

LOL -- it's called "efficiency." Fry's checkout may be a "cattle corral," but at least they pump customers through it pretty quickly. Last time I went to CompUSA, I found what I wanted and went to the front of the store. There wasn't anybody at the cashier stands, so I stood by the service desk, where another customer was trying to make a return or something. There were THREE CompUSA employees behind the service desk and none of them looked at me or said anything to me. They were all focused on this other customer. After about 3 minutes of waiting there like a nimrod, I piped up "Uh, do you think that one of you guys could check me out?" And they all said that they couldn't, because they weren't cashiers. WTF! And then I had to wait a couple more minutes before an actual cashier came up to the front to check me out.

And that was on a day when the store was basically dead. Most of the time at Fry's I don't wait in line for more than a couple of minutes, and the few times that I've been there during a busy period (when the line reached back to the end of the corral) no more than 15. I'd like to see what CompUSA would look like with a comparable customer load. I'd guess half-an-hour waits.

Just went there tonite.. and found that they left one of their labor day only special signs up (the sale was for Monday only) and got 100 DVD+R for $11.97. Bought three sets of them, not sure what I need 300 dvd+r for... and/or if I will ever use all of them but for the price of less then 35.00 for 300 I could not resist.

They have east coast stores, just not many. There's one not too far from my house just outside Atlanta and they're opening another in not too long.
