All I get when I click on that link is http://www.compusa.com/closed.asp. Wierd how a web site can "close". (I forgot, CompUSA's web site actually does do that, early in the morning, I guess for updates or something.)

Is that what you saw, or was it actually OOS? And if so, was it OOS online, or in your store, or what? I'd very much like to get in on this deal, I'm surprised that it would be showing OOS that quickly early Sun. morning. Then again, this is ATHD.

I got that same picture though, just when going directly to http://www.compusa.com/, not even going directly to a product URL, so I think that the website in general is just (briefly, I hope) down for maintenance/update. Like I mentioned, I've seen that before. It's kind of annoying though, because I had hoped to check my local store's stock on that HD and find out what hour that they open, so that I could arrive early and pick one up. I assume that those deals are good at the B&M as well?

Edit: Nevermind, false alarm, the site is back up.

Woot! My store shows as in-stock, no qty. listed though. I hope that the techs didn't hide away all of the white-box drives late last night. I figure that pointing out that their web site shows the item in stock, and I'm there when the store opens, should be a pretty persuasive argument. Either that, or I demand a raincheck. Pity that the store doesn't open until 10am on Sun. I haven't slept yet, and it's 5:15am here.

PS. Anyone know if you can check on CompUSA GC balances online? I was briefly perusing another ATHD thread, and noticed that EB's web site will let you do that. I have GC with an unknown amount that I am hoping to use towards this HD. (Have a friend that was bugging me to buy my 250GB that I picked up due to a prior ATHD thread, I figure I can buy this and then re-sell it to him, and turn the GC into cash in the process.) I think I'm becoming a Hot Deals Addict. Someone help me.

Edit: The back of the gift card says: "For card balance, log on to www.compusa.com". So I guess it must be on their site somewhere. Interesting that the back of the card also states that it cannot be used for internet purchases. Strange double-standard.

Since the drive is $79.99 with no rebates and is shown in the ad as Maxtor L01P160, we should be able to PM at Staples ($139.98) 504516 or Office Depot ($149.97) 447679, use a coupon and come out WAY better.

Well, technically the brand is "Generic", although the model number listed matches one of Maxtor's models. (Obviously the drive in the package *is* a Maxtor HD, based on specs and model number.)

I wonder if Staples would give you an issue over that? Also, I think that these are white-box ("OEM bare drive"), not retail, aren't they? I've never purchased a "generic"-brand CompUSA HD before, so I'm not sure exactly how they are packaged. I once owned a "CompUSA by Maxtor" retail-boxed kit HD, which I assumed was a co-branding partnership between Maxtor and CompUSA, as at the time, CompUSA didn't carry the normal Maxtor-branded retail-boxed HD kits.

Any idea how the warranty coverage works on this HD? Is it through CompUSA, or Maxtor directly?

Edit: Sorry, allisolm, I shouldn't have second-guessed you. The Staples SKU that you linked to is also a "generic" HD, so the should probably pricematch. (I didn't know that Staples carried both "OEM" and retail Maxtor HDs, I thought that they only carried retail. I guess there must be a lot of 160GB Maxtors in the channel.)

This coupon should help; buy two and set up a RAID array, and save.

Staples $139.98, CompUSA $79.99

$139.98 - $79.99 = $59.99
110% of $59.99 is $65.99
$139.98 - $65.99 = $73.99

Staples w/pm = $73.99. If you have a coupon you can get it down $15 or $20 more, depending on the coupon and what the $15 or $10 is "off of" ($15 off $75, $20 off $100, etc) and what you can find as fillers to get up to $75 or $100.

oops SKORPIO got there while I was typing.

I did a PM at staples and they told me that they do 100% PM on sale items and 110% on regular price items. I was about to ask for the details but the hell with it. I just left, since i bought the drive earlier at compusa.

Its funny how stores have 110% pricematch policies, then won't even live up to them when another store has a good deal on something and they have to match it. If they don't want to do 110%, they shouldn't list it on their pricematch guarantee. Btw good deal on the HD, maybe i'll try to PM to somewhere in the area.

The drive at my store is just the Maxtor retail box, not a CompUSA box. Just thought I'd let everyone know! I put two on hold, gonna go pick em up in a couple days...

I was going by what the OP said, as well as the linked CompUSA product page. However you are definately correct, the print ad simply states, well what you just said above. I picked one up, and it was in fact the regular, retail-boxed Maxtor 160GB DM+9 8MB-cache ATA-133 IDE HD. Excellent!

I didn't try to bother PM'ing at Staples, as I had a CompUSA gift card that someone gave to me that I wanted to use up. Now that I have the print ad, I think I might try to get the local BB to PM, my friend wants a HD too. If anyone read the details of my local BB and their PM policies, then this aught to be interesting.

Thanks rasputinj and allisolm, for a good deal on YAHDHD (Yet Another Hot Deals Hard Drive).

PS. Before I forget, my local CUSA had a bunch of "Buffalo" brand wireless networking products, apparently on clearance. They had this nifty wireless router + wireless access-point/range-extender, 802.11g, for $149 (not showing any tag markdowns like the others), and a PCI 'g' card, marked down to like $29 or $39, and a USB 'g' wireless adaptor, definately marked down to $30. They only had limited stock of those, so it looks like a closeout item. Most tags had been slashed at least a couple of times.
($30 for a USB wireless 'g' adaptor is pretty hot in my book! ) So check those out too, when you go, if you hit the B&M.

Also, my local WalMart has the USR "super-g" wireless router on clearance in their electronics endcap for $79 and change. (As most people know, WalMart clearance is local and YMMV. My local WalMart is already totally cleaned out of 'Blitz' wireless networking products.)

Staples PM policy

Interestingly, they claim to PM 110% of competitors prices, but only PM 100% to their own. They *do* specifically mention if you find an item at the store or on their site, and their site or store has it for less, then they will "pricematch" themselves to the lower price.

That's good to know; in the past I've been shot down, trying to purchase something (CD-Rs) at a B&M, at the price offered on their web site, and told that the store is a totally seperate company from the web site, and (IIRC) that they don't match web site prices (at all). (Pretty standard line - too bad it's BS, and that PM policy proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. I wish I had a printout of that in hand a year before.)

If someone wants to get a 110% PM on this item at Staples, might be wise to print that page out before going in, just to have something to argue with them about.

Phoned my local store at 4 p.m. to see if they had any - they did and held one until I got there. They had to turn someone back in the mean time

I got a retail Maxtor 160G 8Mb 1 year warranty WITH an Ultra ATA/133 PCI card inside.

Interestingly the box is priced $299.99 :Q

To anyone who has this setup, are these loud? I saw on the Compusa site they were fluid bearing so I assume they are at least quieter than my WD 80 SE right?

Also does anyone know if the leather MS intellimous explorer for $30 is a good deal?

Whoa. You lucky son-of-a-gun.

I'm actually a bit surprised though - if it included the controller card, I would think that it would be old enough to also state that it had a three-year warranty on the box somewhere. Is that not true? Btw, what is the indicated "seek time" or "access time" specs on the side of the box, and what are the first two digits of the serial number? Better yet, what is the mfg date on the drive itself? I'm curious how long that drive had to have been sitting there, to still have a controller included. The price tag sort of gives it away though. I guess that store must not move a lot of stock from that category.

I picked up a WD 160GB JB drive, with three-year warranty and a re-branded Promise Ultra100 TX2 controller card bundled, at BestBuy, shortly after they had changed their warranty period from three to one year. It was the last drive like that on the shelf. But that was late *last* summer. I'm utterly amazed that you could find one like that now.

It's probably a bit of a tradeoff, the older drives had three platters/six heads, and are slightly slower than currently mfg'ed models, but they include the "free" controller card. My WD JB was the same way, it was a three-platter rather than a two-platter, and thus is slower than my newer single-platter 80GB WD JB.

Edit: Anyone know how these drives are in RAID? I'm wondering if I should sell my recently-acquired 250GB DM+9 to a friend, and pick up another 160GB instead, to make a pair of 160s.

Edit 2: Anyone know if there would be any comflicts, if I installed both the Promise Ultra100 TX2, along with a CMD 0680 RAID IDE controller card? Both have BIOSes onboard.

Edit 3: Important update! See this other thread in GH. It seems that there may have been screwup in Maxtor's warranty database WRT the length of the warranty on the 160GB drives. Please double-check on their web site to make sure yours is correct. OP might want to add this note too.

No comments on the 256mb SD card for $30 AR? That seems pretty hot as the cheapest I've seen was the $36 one from eCost.

I think I may go scoop one up.

The wireless Intellimouse Explorer is a very nice deal at $30. I think the best price I have seen is $32 + shipping from Livewarehouse for an OEM version of the silver.

Best part about the Microsoft wireless mice is battery life is estimated at 6 months.
