CompUSA

Product: Epson Perfection 1200U Scanner - $149.97

Limitations: One to a customer.

Offered by Best Buy, Staples, or Office Max? No.

This is more an availability buy than a huge bargain (though it's still lower than anything on Pricewatch). The 1200U is a top-rated (both by reviewers and owners) 1200X2400 scanner, and has been very hard to come by lately. While it's a recently discontinued model, there's a good argument to be made that it is better than its successor, the 1240U (low price for it on Pricewatch about $165). The 1200U is a sturdier machine than the 1240U (Epson is shifting from metal to plastic in its new scanners.). It has an on/off switch, unlike the 1240U, which saves on lamp life. It's scanning speed is a little faster than the 1240U (6.5msec compared to 7). On the other hand, the 1240U is a 42-bit internal/external scanner while the 1200U is a 36-bit internal/24-bit external scanner, and has a few handy one-touch buttons the 1200U doesn't.

Essentially, if you have to have more resolution than what the typical consumer-level scanner will give you, and you don't like what you see from the 1240U, take a look at this one.

I haven't seen this one around CompUSA, so don't be surprised if you don't, and be ready to make an advance purchase on Sunday if you really want it.

Teac CDR58 8X8X32 CD-RW Drive - $99.97

Limitations: None

Offered by Best Buy, Staples or Office Max? No

It's not the Iomega deal, but if you need a high-quality CD-RW and can't wait, this is a better deal than anything else out there next week.

When do these deals start exactly?

Also would I be better off paying $200 - $50 rebate for the TDK 12x (already ordered @ necx) or should I go with this one? I don't know if +4x faster write and burnproof is worth $50..

amnesiac - Burn Proof is so worth the extra money. you get NO buffer underruns, even burning over a network at 12x... or so I've heard.

Question on the $50 difference. With many deals offering 50 CDR's for $10, that's 250 CDR's you can make into coasters before you break even. I don't know how many CDR's you'll burn, but I haven't burned 250 in total yet, let alone worry about 250 coasters. I'd be dollars ahead of the game by NOT opting for the more expensive burn proof unit.

Which is a better deal: The 1200u/1240u for $150, or the 610u/636u for $50? I am looking for a scanner and am wondering is the 1200 plus the better software bundle worth the extra $100? Will I really need/use the higher resolution and color depth? This will be my first scanner so any advice in real world use will be appreciated.

Bob61, I guess your time is worth nothing. Mine isn't. I'm not a brain surgeon, but I do value my time. If I were to burn at 8x, that would take an extra 50% in time. That isn't so much the issue, but without the burnproof, you can't/shouldn't do anything else while burning. If you don't, you loose precious computer time. If you do, you very likely will burn a coaster, and that will waste even more time.

The times of setting up a CD layout and then leaving you computer alone for 15-20 minutes to wait for a CD are over. Pay the $50 extra and get a burnproof drive that will allow a CD to be made in about 7-8 mins, and you can keep on working on your computer doing what ever you wish.

On the calculation of whether it's worth it, don't forget to value your time!

The Epson perfection 1200U scanner is an awesome scanner! It's pretty fast and has excellent scans. Sometimes when I scan pictures, it even picks up some of the dust that's on the picture (of course I had to clean it and rescan it). It comes with a pretty good software package (but that didn't matter to me since I already had imaging software). I got it when it was at buy.com for 158 - 30 off 150 coupon plus free shipping (good thing I saved it in my cart before the free shipping thing cuz they jacked up the price to 160+). I was also lucky enough to have an extra 29 dollar credit on my CC since I got credited twice for my late charge waive . So final price for me was 99 shipped from buy.com. Too bad they don't have it in stock at buy.com anymore

rcraig, IMHO a 636U for $50 is a lot better deal. For reference, a photograph is approx 200 dpi. Since the dots in the source won't line up with the dots of the scanner, a 1200 scanner will do a better job but not by much. More color depth is good but you'll only get 24 bit from the scanner to the PC. The extra depth is useful for the histogram tool so you'll still have 24 bits after you crop off some on each end of the spectrum. I didn't know there was a 610U but whatever you get, do not buy a parallel port scanner. It will effectively lock your PC while you scan and no consumer scanner is fast enough to make that tolerable.

DO NOT LISTEN TO BOB61. Burn Proof is worth the extra money. I have the Iomega burning at 12X while I am surfing the net and doing other stuff on my old 233. I take as much time as a 4X to burn the disk because it's correcting the constant buffer underrun. However, I do NOT need to worry about getting a coaster and still use the PC.

Get a CDRW with burnproof. I've got the Plextor 12/10/32 IDE and love it. I've not made a coaster yet (except when doing DAO which the folks at Plextor helped me fix with an updated driver) when making discs. I can surf the net, run AutoCAD, write a letter, whatever--all why the disc is being burned.

An alternative to burnproof is SCSI, since CPU utlilization is very low. I've heard of people playing games while burning full speed on SCSI.

I rarely use mine, but my Imation-branded Plextor 8x20x CD-R is great -- no coasters yet.

I was wondering where you found the $50 rebate on the Teac 12/10/32? Also has anyone purchased this drive recently? The website has two versions. One ends in E and the other in EB designating the Burn Software. Is the retail market just not updating their info links or is Teac still selling both products?

I agree with AndrewR,

I use a SCSI burner (external). Yeah it's an old slow clunker, but does all I want it to...that is, make data and audio cd's.

I've NEVER made a coaster.....playing Quake3 or Halflife and buring CD's...no problem. I even ripped a 5GB DVD to my IDE HD while playing Halflife-Counter strike (Set flask to low priority, but it did do frames...but only like %15 of normal).

I will only buy a SCSI burner....internal is fine as I'll just toss it into the external casing.

For most people....8x8x32x is fine....at $99 it's a great buy if you don't have a burner.

With IDE, burnproof is really nice since huge amount of cpus is taken when burning a cd. I was noticing anywhere from 50 to 100 percent when burning a cd at 12x. On the other hand when I burn with my scsi 12x, I don't notice an cpu at all. The iomega is my first ide burner, I do have to say burnproof is very impressive since I have tried tons of things trying to kill the cd from extracting a dvd, encoding another one, surfing the net, play mp3 and burn at 12x at the same time. Still got the cd burned. One thing to note is that since all these things were all running, the computer was pretty much slow like a turtle especially while it was burning. Really don't have that problem with slowdown with scsi, but it cost me twice as much.

So if you want an ide, got the extra bucks, and don't worry and waste cds, definitely go with the burnproof drive.

If you only burn less than 10 cd a month, then just get whats cheap, it will do, I know cause I have brought tons for others.
