They're giving you the same discount their own employees get on notebook and desktop computers. Now is the perfect time to upgrade to the machines you?ve been wanting for months.

7/15 and 7/16 only.

Thats such a scam. They don't make tons and tons of profit on computers and notebooks. It's all the accessories you buy along with them that they really make a killing. Your not savings a whole lot on desktops and laptops.

i worked at compusa for 1.5 years...we got them at cost, and they almost never have more than 5-10% margin.

Computers (except for super high end) are not marked up very much. Accessories are where it is. I remember when I worked at Best Buy. One year they lost 80 mil on computers and made 160 mil on computer accessories.

Room temperature at best.

well people bought into the silly GM employee discount program (even though you could have gotten a better deal on a car the month before the program started), so compusa is just jumping on the bandwagon like everyone else. I strongly feel that a good percentage of everyday retail customers are morons.

What is the employee discount? is it a percentage? or its a specific price for each product?

Edit: Also isn't this for everything in the store? I haven't seen anything specifying only laptop/desktops...

Edit2: Never mind...i see it...laptops/desktops... stuff you really want all excluded

So if I read it right the discount is to "cost" and that is usually only 5-10% off regular price? Is that the dealio?

Do you have proof of that?

The SAAB Aero wagon(ie SAABARU) was a smoking deal at 21k which some prople got it at.

The email I got doesn't say what percentage the employee discount is, but does state it is in-store only.

I will be buying a new system in the next few days, but doubt I will even bother to check out this so-called sale. This has all the earmarks of a bogus sale riding on the coat-tails of the auto industry efforts.

that's not entirely true. you can haggle the price of a car, you can't do the same for computer hardware. some people (like me) hate haggling and would pay a little bit more for a fair price right off the bat.

It is not a scam. I actually got a SONY MFM-HT95 monitor for $718 out the door which included 7.75% sales tax during their last "Cost for all Employees and Friends" promo. The unit retails for $799 ($861 with CA TAX) and CompUSA Cost was around $666.

So this really isn't a scam, it just depends on what you buy. BTW, I also checked BFG 6600GT OC and it was $203 or so at the time which was higher than ohter e-stores so gotta check their costs first.

This may be indeed a good deal!

No one is calling it a "scam" in the sense like phishing emails are scams.

It's a scam in the sense that some people will think this is a super hot deal when in fact you only say a few %. Like many others have said, computer desktops/laptops are only marked up a little bit 5-10% from "at cost" price.

It's a decent deal if you are looking for a new sytem, but then again, CompUSA might sell them for more to begin with. Meh.

when i worked at compusa...we were authorized to make 'package' deals by selling certain accessories at cost. compusa branded accesories were always at 1 cent at cost. also, compusa used to have this policy that if a person walks out of a store buying 8 items (including the computer) the salesperson would get a extra bonus. So we always just threw in 7 'compusa' branded accessories to get the extra dough. I dont think this is the case nowadays with compusa, especially with them revisiing their business model in the last few years to compete with Bestbuy and Circuit City. They should revise their name though..to let people know they dont sell just computer related products, but all kinds of electronics

FYI, this is valid for APPLE products. (Even though the margin on apple products is ~8%, it's a good deal because apple NEVER goes on sale).
