Does anyone know what happens at the end of the 12 months? I do not want to get into a situation that requires a subscription every year to continue working.

This is a great price but I decided to buy Norton SystemWorks 2003 for $8 (OEM) with free shipping from globe2000.com

I've heard that NAV 2004 now has software activation and it's an unstable resource hog. I'm not sure if these have been proven to be true or not.

Received my Norton SystemWorks 2003 CD in 1 week, came in a sleeve with a valid ID #. Works great. Besides I didn't really want to deal with the rebate hassles.

That's the way the thing works. It's been like that for, like, forever. All Symantec and McAfee products give you a 12-month subscription to download updates and such. Once the 12-months is over, you either pay Symantec $24.95 for another 12-months of updates or do what I sometimes do... Uninstall, then reinstall. You'll get another 12-moths of updates. Rinse. Repeat until product is no longer supported by manufacturer.

What if there is a new strain of virus (we'll call it FERENGI-C) which your old "rinse and repeat" Norton isn't updated for?

If you do your "rinse and repeat" cycle, can you still update your Norton to the most recent virus definitions?

I've done it a few times since 2000. Did it with NAV and NU. Recently, I did it with Systemworks 2002.

There is a patch for Norton Antivirus 2004 (separate or part of Norton Systemworks or Norton Internet Security) that attempts to fix the having to reactivate after each reboot. A new install of NA 2004 will allow the product to be ACTIVATED (like TurboTax of last year) before updates and virus definitions can be downloaded. The patch that can be found on the Symantec knowledge base cleans up alot of the problems with ACTIVATIONS "not holding" between reboots because it checks for changes on the activated machine to prevent "cloning" or otherwise coping the product to multiple machines. However, for my RAID 1 Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 (Nvida nForce 2 Ultra chipset) machine I can not properly kept it activated after each reboot and it is a pain to go thru the reactivation process every 2 - 3 days. Symantec's activation process is just as buggy as TurboTax's was - Tech Support says that there was no fix to my problem if the patch didn't work other than to go back to a previous version of the product. BE FOREWARNED - I now run McAfee Viruscan (Free after Rebate) and McAfee Firewall (free to Comcast High Speed Internet subscribers for one year) and have returned my copy of Norton Internet Security 2004 for refund.

You can get NA 2003 OEM for about $10 - AntiSpam worked great when i tried it but it does not work for Eudora 5.2 or 6.x yet. I run NSW 2003 and NFW 2003 on my old machine. My wife always gives me a hard time about playing the upgrade game and with Norton Antivirus 2004 - I would skip this upgrade till they fix the ACTIVATION process completely.

For Systemworks 2003 or AV 2003, a simple uninstall/reinstall does NOT work.....found out that myself. And tracking down that registry value Symantec leaves is a drag...can't find the thing!!! 2002 and versions before WILL uninstall/reinstall and act like they are on there for the first time, but 2003 "remembers" that it was installed once before.

Now, a reformatting of your hard drive followed by an installation WILL work, but that's a big pain in the butt, too.....simpler to just buy the new subscription.

I buy a new version of NAV in January every year. It is free after rebates if you buy it with tax software (Turbo Tax and Taxcut). That way there is no need for subscription updates.

Don't worry there's always some crazy upgrade rebate that makes it practically free or at least very inexpensive to buy next year's version.

True and some of us reformat every 6 months anyway. I reformat everytime I get a bigger hard drive, the biggest one is usually the fastest and that's the one I want my OS on. I know the old installation can be copied, but a fresh installation is always awesome - it gets rid of all the garbage that was installed and you start anew with just what you need. In this way you can keep on using your NAV program and get updates.
