Rebates are SCAM period.
You just keep right on believing that and I'll just keep right on collecting my rebates.

I lost $75 on a item that i bought over black friday sale!
!@#$%^ refused the rebate saying that the item was bought outside the valid date even though the correct date was printed on the receipt! I hadn't made a copy of my sales receipt and hence cudn't pursue those b@#$%!!
I'll never ever ever buy anything that has a MIR.

I cannot believe that the court sided with the consumer so thoroughly in this case. I thought this was America where the consumer is treated worse than Abu Graib prisoners.

wow, youre an idiot.

but back to the topic at hand. i totally agree with the courts findings. if a retailer knowingly advertises items that have rebate "irregularities" they should be held liable. im sure if compusa hadnt been so greedy (and had stopped selling rebate items after the first reports of non-compliant rebates came in) their problem wouldnt have snowballed like it has.

compusa has essentially been false advertising for years (im sure company officials knew rebates werent coming in after the first couple thousand complaints but they kept advertising them anyway) and im glad that they are being forced to pay for it.

Rebates suck. I always keep perfect records, so have ALWAYS gotten paid, but I have had to fight tooth and nail for a few of thoose.

Folks, there was no court holding in this case. Instead, there was an administrative complaint issued by the FTC, and CompUSA settled it per an agreement with the FTC. I would assume that this settlement contains a "non-admissions clause" so that CompUSA can deny that it was found to have engaged in wrong-doing.

The real value here is that the FTC recognizes that consumers are being screwed, and that it is willing to take steps to address the issue.

I have filed complaints with the FTC against Soyo and Zipzoomfly, who sold me Soyo motherboards last November. At the time it was pretty clear that Soyo rebates were problematic and Zipzoomfly was prominently advertizing FAR motherboards from Soyo. I had relied on Zipzoomfly's word that these rebates were good, bolsterd by their good resellerratings score. This makes their situation much like that exploited by CompUSA.

I have had pretty good luck with my CUSA rebates...i got the 6800 card for 229 with a $30 rebate that I got 3 weeks later...

out of all my Black Friday rebates ( was waiting on over $500 of rebates - mostly from Fry's), I am only missing 1 $40 rebate that I haven't called on yet...
