Anyone know if the SMC router can work just as an AP, without using the router/Firewall features? I already have a firewall, but $50 seems like a great price for a second AP for the house.

It seems like you can, I just got it and you can turn off the Firewall feature.

If that's the case, you can get the Panasonic DVD-RV32K for $99.99 after a $20 rebate at Circuit City or Best Buy for the same price. CompUSA is offering no deals in regards to posting the DVD player at the price.

However, if someone is truly interested in the DVD-RV32K player, then I suggest you check out your local Circuit City store. I picked up 2 of their "open box" models for $69.99 + tax. Circuit City typically sells these "open box" players @ $89.99. However, if you point out to the salesperson that a new player - still sealed in the original box is only $10.00 more after the rebate, they should drop the price another $20.00 (or, equivalent to the rebate amount) on the player. This same situation happened to me both times and took about 2 minutes to complete the transaction. Both players were in very, very good condition. In fact, one of them still had the seal in place on the accessories box - meaning that the box had been opened up, but the player had not been used because the power cord, remote control and video cables were still fully sealed up. These players are great players at $99.99, but they're "awesome" players at $69.99.

And for those of us NOWHERE NEAR a Fry's, this may still be semi-hot...

Fry's Outpost.com has the SMC7004VWBR for $49.99 AR ($50), which is not the same router listed on the CompUSA page.
CompUSA is showing the SMC2404WBR, which Outpost offers for $69.99 AR ($50).

hey. you're right compusa one is 22mbps compatible..

much better

Like you are even going to hit that high. You have to have special wireless cards for that, and even then its not going to get probably much more than half that much. The standard 11 mbps actually generaly only hits 5 or 6mbps in real life situations, and that's with a good reception.

Besides, its all way more than the typical 1.5 you get downstream from DSL.

Yep, I just bought one for $69.99 out the door (no MIR). It's an ATA133 drive, the Diamondmax Plus 9 w/ fluid dynamic bearings/3 year warranty. You just print out the internet ad and present it to the cashier for the instant discount savings. The only downside that I see is that it comes w/ only a 2 mb cache.

The SMC2404WBR is a very good router, I own it's little brother, SMC7004WBR and it has worked flawlessly for me. I'm almost tempted to get this one and maybe e-gay mine
For a router, it provide a pretty good firewall for your network, beside the commonly used NAT, it also has SPI (stateful packet Inspection) which don't usually available for comparably priced router (>$100)
so this is pretty hot deal IMHO.

Just a quick update to my earlier reply. Costco now stocks the DVD-RV32K Panasonic DVD player for $99.99 (before a $20 mail-in rebate.)

Thanks for the post. Picked up the SMC router the other day, installation was a piece of cake, and it has passed the first round of tests that I have thrown at it. For $50 (cheaper than any wap I have seen), it is a GREAT deal.

I've had the SMC7004VWBR since the end of November. No problems. Seems to work just fine. But I'm a networking newbie, so I can't get into the nitty gritty. But it does the job for me.

As for Apex, someone I know has an Apex player and it's a POS all the way. I paid $300 for my Sony back in the day and it's still light years ahead of the newer Apex. The Apex skips and lags sometimes. I'll pass. I'll never recommend one of them to anyone after seeing that one's performance.

And, for those quick on their toes, go check out Compuexpert/Gogamer for Warcraft III. The clock is ticking.

I wouldnt get that SMC7004VWBR for wireless if you dont like to reset it often. The amazon reviews are correct about it. I bought one at Frys which had the newest bios revision 1.20A and returned it because of it.

If you leave the wireless router on for >12 hours or so(basically overnight) with no wireless client activity, the wireless connection dies. You'll have to reset the router for the wireless connection to work again.

Other than that, the smc wireless router is great and can work as just an access point.

The wireless router is listed as $49 on the main page. But, when you click on the link, the detailed information indicates $79.99 after instant and mail-in rebates. - However, as their ad states, "print out a copy of the specials and take them to your local store." I'd just print the main page and let the local store work out the details so that you can get the router for $49.99. Heck, they'd probably just give you an "instant" price adjustment down to $49.99 and then you could sweeten it up a bit by sending in the rebates.

[Edit]: I realized this same issue was noted earlier up above. Doesn't anyone at CompUSA perform a QC check of their prices before finalizing their Web pages? Apparently not!

I think the idea is that it's an in-store discount and has nothing to do with their web site offerings. Those are always a link to the regular price just so you know the product in question. The product pages intentionally don't have the in-store-only prices.

And I'm surprised everyone is so down on CUSA. Around here, it's the only decent place to go. The jerkoff college kids at BB's PC dept don't know anything about what's on sale and their selection is crap. Staples has no CS or stock. OM is okay, but not for the real geeky stuff. And that leave CUSA. They have a nice selection, their employees always know about the deals, and they offer to get things from the back for you. Their regular prices aren't anything to write home about, but when they have deals, they're great deals.

Actually, my favorite for sales is Microcenter. I would never buy any serious hardware there, but the little stuff on sale in the ads and at the front of the store are so CHEAP. It's like a thrift store for computer accessories.

This is interesting. I went and purchased the same drive on Sat. night, the last night of the sale. The cashier called the manager, and he went to the service desk to look up the drive. Said something about a $30 rebate starting Sun., and that the printed version of the web ad that I brought in was incorrect. (I.e, they didn't want to sell me the drive for only $69.99. Well, he looked it up, and I pointed out that there was no red "Rebate" sign to click on on the individual product on their web site. The store was closing in 30 min, and he said "just do it". The cashier seemed slightly miffed at me, or maybe he was just in a rush to get myself and a couple other customers through the line so that he could close early or something. CompUSA is the master of bait'n'switch, let me tell you that. I did get the drive, but not after some small hassle.

Anyways, I went to BestBuy on a lark, to check out their Maxtor drive selection, and to see if they might have a rebate posted for the drive. Alas, no rebate, but I noticed that the box/packaging was different. The boxes at BestBuy, were Maxtor retail boxes, and had a sticker on the front in blue, saying something like "Up to 33% quieter, with Fluid Dynamic Bearings." The CompUSA box is different, it says "CompUSA by Maxtor" along the top, and has a sticker on the front that says "7200 RPM / Faster launching, playing, saving. / Up to 33% faster than a 5400 RPM!", in red and yellow. I'm wondering if perhaps just that the packages are different, or perhaps that CompUSA's drives are older stock, and perhaps don't have FDBs? The specs on the side of the box are the same, but they don't specifically mention FDB. The "Kit number" is different between the two. The CompUSA box has "Kit: L06J060". I don't recall the BestBuy retail box kit number exactly, but it was more like "L01J060". Maybe another character or two in there somewhere. I wondered if perhaps the "01" meant that it had a single platter, and perhaps the one I got was an older model with 3 platters/6 heads? Or am I mis-reading the kit number codes?

I haven't opened the shrink-wrap yet on the box. I want to find out if there is going to be a rebate posted on Sun. I'm thinking that perhaps I made a mistake, perhaps I should have gone to BestBuy to PM immediately. But if I had done that, and failed, CompUSA would have been closed already, and then I would have missed out entirely. But if the drive isn't the newer 1-platter DM9+ drive with FDB, I'm probably going to just take it back anyways, and wait for the next great HD sale deal.

If there is either a CompUSA or Maxtor rebate on the drive, and it requires a purchase starting Sun., how likely would it be for me to be able to take back the drive and re-purchase it, at the same sale price, on Sun? Perhaps at another store? I'm thinking of simply taking it back for an exchange, and then asking if I can do a return + repurchase instead, so that it doesn't show an exchange on the reciept. But if CompUSA knows about the rebate then, would they refuse it? Even if it is a mfg rebate and not a CompUSA rebate? (That would be very poor customer service, I admit.)

The other question is, if it is a mfg rebate, will the "CompUSA by Maxtor" retail kit qualify, or only a "real" Maxtor retail drive kit? Points to ponder.

Edit: Looks like the employees at CompUSA might have been confused. There is now (Sun. morning) a $50 mail-in rebate showing on the CompUSA web site, for the 100GB WD BB drive, the 2MB cache 7200 RPM one, not the 8GB "SE" or "JB" version. However, the WD100BBRTL is only $79.99 after rebate, which is still less than the $1/GB, so not too shabby. Certainly a better deal overall than the Maxtor 60GB 7200 RPM 2MB cache drive for $69.99, which isn't showing any rebates yet, and probably won't.

I"ve opened the box and checked on the serials. Indeed these are the newer DIamonmaxplus 9 series. Not 8mb versions though, but all of them are FDBs.

Yeah, after checking Maxtor's and CompUSA's web site on Sun., I didn't find any trace of a rebate, so I opened mine. The drive was dated Oct. 2002, DM+ 9, 2MB cache, FDB, seems like a single-platter 60GB, fairly quiet at idle, but seeks are noisier than my 30GB 75GXP. Overall performance is about the same.

Turns out, the WD 40GB drive has a rebate on it starting Sun., the people working at CompUSA when I bought my drive must have been confused. I was hoping that there might be a mfg. rebate on my Maxtor drive as well, but $70 for 60GB isn't bad at all, especially for a retail 3yr warrantee, which is getting harder to find.
