Yep, I just bought one for $69.99 out the door (no MIR). It's an ATA133 drive, the Diamondmax Plus 9 w/ fluid dynamic bearings/3 year warranty. You just print out the internet ad and present it to the cashier for the instant discount savings. The only downside that I see is that it comes w/ only a 2 mb cache.
This is interesting. I went and purchased the same drive on Sat. night, the last night of the sale. The cashier called the manager, and he went to the service desk to look up the drive. Said something about a $30 rebate starting Sun., and that the printed version of the web ad that I brought in was incorrect. (I.e, they didn't want to sell me the drive for only $69.99. Well, he looked it up, and I pointed out that there was no red "Rebate" sign to click on on the individual product on their web site. The store was closing in 30 min, and he said "just do it". The cashier seemed slightly miffed at me, or maybe he was just in a rush to get myself and a couple other customers through the line so that he could close early or something. CompUSA is the master of bait'n'switch, let me tell you that. I did get the drive, but not after some small hassle.
Anyways, I went to BestBuy on a lark, to check out their Maxtor drive selection, and to see if they might have a rebate posted for the drive. Alas, no rebate, but I noticed that the box/packaging was different. The boxes at BestBuy, were Maxtor retail boxes, and had a sticker on the front in blue, saying something like "Up to 33% quieter, with Fluid Dynamic Bearings." The CompUSA box is different, it says "CompUSA by Maxtor" along the top, and has a sticker on the front that says "7200 RPM / Faster launching, playing, saving. / Up to 33% faster than a 5400 RPM!", in red and yellow. I'm wondering if perhaps just that the packages are different, or perhaps that CompUSA's drives are older stock, and perhaps don't have FDBs? The specs on the side of the box are the same, but they don't specifically mention FDB. The "Kit number" is different between the two. The CompUSA box has "Kit: L06J060". I don't recall the BestBuy retail box kit number exactly, but it was more like "L01J060". Maybe another character or two in there somewhere. I wondered if perhaps the "01" meant that it had a single platter, and perhaps the one I got was an older model with 3 platters/6 heads? Or am I mis-reading the kit number codes?
I haven't opened the shrink-wrap yet on the box. I want to find out if there is going to be a rebate posted on Sun. I'm thinking that perhaps I made a mistake, perhaps I should have gone to BestBuy to PM immediately. But if I had done that, and failed, CompUSA would have been closed already, and then I would have missed out entirely. But if the drive isn't the newer 1-platter DM9+ drive with FDB, I'm probably going to just take it back anyways, and wait for the next great HD sale deal.
If there is either a CompUSA or Maxtor rebate on the drive, and it requires a purchase starting Sun., how likely would it be for me to be able to take back the drive and re-purchase it, at the same sale price, on Sun? Perhaps at another store? I'm thinking of simply taking it back for an exchange, and then asking if I can do a return + repurchase instead, so that it doesn't show an exchange on the reciept. But if CompUSA knows about the rebate then, would they refuse it? Even if it is a mfg rebate and not a CompUSA rebate? (That would be very poor customer service, I admit.)
The other question is, if it is a mfg rebate, will the "CompUSA by Maxtor" retail kit qualify, or only a "real" Maxtor retail drive kit? Points to ponder.
Edit: Looks like the employees at CompUSA might have been confused. There is now (Sun. morning) a $50 mail-in rebate showing on the CompUSA web site, for the 100GB WD BB drive, the 2MB cache 7200 RPM one, not the 8GB "SE" or "JB" version. However, the WD100BBRTL is only $79.99 after rebate, which is still less than the $1/GB, so not too shabby. Certainly a better deal overall than the Maxtor 60GB 7200 RPM 2MB cache drive for $69.99, which isn't showing any rebates yet, and probably won't.
