I have received my iomega drive(firmware 1.06) and it's a rebadge plextor. I haven't changed the firmware to a plextor yet, but I'm having problems running adaptec easy cd creator because the explorer in the program keep refreshing the damn cdburner every second. Does anyone else have this problem?
BTW it works find in cdrwin but not adaptec.

Honestly, who would need 3 of the same CD writer? I had 6 PC in my house and 4 CD writers, but it's because I upgrade. I have a 8X Plextor, 12X Sony, 12X SCSI S&F and I do have the Iomgea myself. I also brought 1 Iomgea for my neighbor (2 different trips to B&M CompUSA). A lot of people that ordered more than 1 just dump it at egay, thus depriving others of the chance to get one at the sale price. If you want more than one, you should at least know to do it in seperate orders, especially for item as hot as this.

Nutzo--You are on the right track with your letter. A bit of refinement and copied to a couple other places might help. I've emailed CompScrewUSA, and will give them a few days to reply concerning the numerous drives I haven't received. Depending on their response, I may suggest a few things we can try. Possibly an OT thread to come.

RandyL--You are correct. Many, if not most or all, of the B&M's had no limit on the number of drives.

SinMen--Ya get out much?

randypj,
No I don't go out much. But when I saw a hot deal like this , I will at least get my butt off 2 times to go to a B&M store to pick up the deal. And I still have the original ad in my hand that said "1 per customer per offer". So yes, there are stores that may allow you to buy more, but it's only they do not enforce the policy. BTW, the original rebate from the B&M store was NOT a CompUSA rebate. It was a Imogea rebate, and that should explain why Imogea can set a 10 per household limit. You probably don't know this because you do not have the original rebate, right?

There was NO limit on the number of drives in the ad or on the web site. If they had them at the store, I could have walked in & bought 50. The only limit was on the rebate form, it was limited to 10 !

Look at the ad again. The Limit one refers to a computer for, sale on that page, NOT the Drive.

If I had bought 10, then I might have deserved a little abuse, but 4 ?

Not that I need to justify myself, but... One for my system, one for the wife's as a backup, one for my brother & one for a friend (he was out of town that weekend & couldn't get one). I was going to stand in line at the store, but they where out the night before the sale. They took so long to ship, that my friend gave up & went out & bought a different drive. Looks like that one will end up on Eb*y now, if I ever get it. But that WASN'T the original intent.

If you look closely, at the back of that page, it said "Quantities limited. 1 per customer per offer. NOT available via MAIL ORDER/INTERNET. Postage and sales tax required for mail-in rebates." Of course, you can always argue that only applies to the item on the back page. I am not saying there is not legitimate reason to get more than 1 drive. But when people try to suggest using group pressure and publicity to get a company to give in, I think it's streching too far.

Hey SinMen, I got no particular beef with your reasoning on how many units should have been purchased but as for group/public presure not being legit I do have a beef. Those are traditional pressure tactics used the world over. Those were the very tactics used by Samual Gompers when he started the first unions to fight for oppressed workers early last centuary. The tactics are sound when dealing with unjust and more powerful entities. I don't know if this case is applicable or not. The question is, "Will the mods lock this thread for this obviously OT post?"

The printed add is not relevant to those that ordered online because the deal was on the CompUsa Website.. The description of the drive showed the price as 99 dollars after rebate.

Mine is still backordered.

I don't think the 1 per customer limit was for the drive, at least not in the Raleigh store, NC. One of my friend went there late, so he just backordered 10. This WednesdayCompUSA called him to pick them up. I am pissed, 'cuz I cancelled my backorder and went for a $149 VeloCD. I should have just waited for 1 more week.

Be nice to SinMen. The forum can use the comic relief.

Picture SinMen walking up to the counter (if he didn't have CD-RW drives yet) and saying: "I have 6 PCs but only 4 have any data worth backing up so I need 4 drives please. I see you have this 12x10x32x in unlimited quantities on sale for $99. I absolutely refuse to have more than one of the same drive in order to maximize my learning curve and installation woes. Show me some much more expensive but lower performance drives, please".

Ever heard of a network? Guess you miss out on the th Linksys 19.99 Network in a box deal. It's alright to be an egayer. There is no need to deny it.

Finally got my shipping confirmation today. It says the drive shipped out today (Saturday) ... I wonder if they shipped it overnight or 2-day mail, because I didn't think they normally ship on Saturdays, unless it went out USPS Priority Mail... (Order #506xx, ordered 10:23:40 AM)

I sure hope I don't get the Sanyo version ... I ordered this drive specifically because I found out it was a twin of the Plextor 12/10/32A (and thus why I spent time making the ID changing program for the Iomega drive)

Technically "shipped" probably means "we have your order boxed up and have sent out a pickup manifest to FedEX." I doubt that CompUSA would upgrade your shipping for free. Doesn't seem to agree with their previous practices in this deal.

Yeah you're probably right, maybe CompUSA's ordering system is just so screwed up that it shipped yesterday and didnt actually register with their system till today ... Who knows, I'm just happy I finally got my drive shipped, I just hope its not the Sanyo version!

First, will someone PLEASE e-mail me the rename the plex drive thread download!? I have tried to get it like 8 times from roundsparrow.com but I keep getting locked up at 99% and then my system freezes

Please send to bwst@copper.net THANKS!

OK - this may "suck the fatty" most of all. I went to CompUSSR back in the day (the first day this deal was offered) and lo and behold they were already all gone. Well, since I have a 8432 Plextor right now, no sweat, I'll get a raincheck and wait (and hope) they come through.

Forward 4/5? weeks to this past Thursday I FINALLY recieved my call from "Laura" on my ans. machine that CompUSSR got the drives in and they would hold for 48 hours and I should bring my raincheck form to claim it.

Kewl - I'm thinkng. Had to go to a Hockey game last night so couldn't go then. I get up this morning and head out with great anticipation to "the USSR". I get there, get the drive, all good - no probs (did ask if I could get 2 but no go since my raincheck said 1 - Damn, oh well had to try.

Anyway, I get home, open it up and it one of the new SANYO's!!! F*$#!

So I am guessing that many of you folks MAY be getting the Sanyo's and NOT the Plextors that we all were hoping for. I just mention this now so that you all can get out and pick up an "older" drive from someplace that charges too much for them and possibly swap the "old" drive with the "new" drive when you get it.

I am not recommending this, just mentioning it as a possible option if you get teh "Iomega shaft" like I did.

Just be aware, for what it is worth, the real Plex I got comes in a pink anti-static bag and the Sanyo came in a blue one.

Good luck!

Try this link:
Link

This is specifically for the Iomega -> Plextor Drive and back.
Make sure you read the readme.txt file first!!!!!!!! I've gotten emails from quite a few people who messed up their CDROM drives because they didn't read the directions FIRST!

Why is everyone so worried about getting the Sanyo rather than the Plextor? The following was posted by mrVW (the proprietor of roundsparrow.com) in this thread

Date Posted: Feb/02/2001 9:49 AM Message OptionsSubscribe to ThreadPrint ThreadText Format

I don't know about the DAE... it claims to do 32x reading, so there is hope... but like the "Plextor", this took several firmware updates to get DAE to work at that speed (my Iomega/Plextor came with a 20x sticker on the box... updating the firmware got a boost in DAE speed).

About CloneCD: -- actually the Sanyo MAY BE BETTER than the Plextor in this regard! there are issues with the SD2 copy protection. Look on this page under the "CloneCD and SD2 Copy Protection" section -- I do not know, but it is always possible that the Sanyo may be able to do this when the Plextor can not.

At least in this regard, the Plextor is actually NOT the best drive for CloneCD.
