Is anyone else having download troubles at RoundSparrow? The (single) message posted in this thread is the only one I have seen. email
Webmaster@RoundSparrow.com if you need help. It could be an issue with my Firewall... but it is a HTTP 1.1 download, and I'm getting email from people every day who have downloaded it without problem.
As for the Sanyo... yes, people are getting them. I am getting email @RoundSparrow.com about them.
OK, with that out of the way. I've spent a lot of hours in the past 35 days regarding these drives. I have read and replied to HUNDREDS of emails from people who aren't even aware of Anandtech. I want to make a few comments:
-- There really is very little reason to rename your drive. it is a "risky" procedure, the program requires ASPI to be just right, and there just isn't that much benefit.
-- The firmware hack is what most people should be interested in. If you are on 1.05 or earlier, you should consider updating your firmware. 1.06 is just as good by all accounts (Plextor never actually released 1.06 on their web site, so who knows for sure what is new in 1.07 from 1.06 -- I do know that DAE works at 32x in 1.06!).
And last:
-- By all accounts the Sanyo is a quality drive too. I think it would be a waste of time to return it? I haven't heard of any case where someone could copy a disc with the Plextor that wouldn't copy on the Sanyo? I'm all ears on this issue, as I'd like to post details on the site if there are pratical differences. I think Plextor was ahead of the CloneCD game back in late summer, but now even Yamaha has caught up to this... Yes, Plextor is good, but no reasons I have seen to say "Sanyo is bad".
-- Maybe one difference, perhaps: I do NOT know what DAE speed the Sanyo will do... like I've suggested in the past, it took Plextor several firmware updates to get 32x DAE... The first 8 months the Plextor was on the market it didn't do 32x DAE. It wasn't until September 2000 that these udpates came out. I don't know where Sanyo is on this. Also remember that the 32x DAE is ONLY ON CERTAIN TRACKS, the average is much lower than 32x. So if your Sanyo doesn't do 32x, take a step back and make sure you are comparing Apples to Apples before returning what appears to be a quality drive!
I've gotten email from some people who have done foolish things like accidently trash their Plextor 40x SCSI CD-ROM drive... I think people are getting a bit overexcited about theses hacks Especially the rename, there are really very few cases that you would benefit from it.
OK, off the soap box!
