Computer auto shuts down before POST

Hi to all.

I have a weird problem.

My computer, when powered up, auto shuts down after 4-5 seconds. In that time, fans and HDDs are spinning, but no signal goes to the monitor. Then it just turns off. No beeps, nothing.

After trying 5-6 times, it eventually boots up.

Bringing the CPU at its original speed and voltage does not help.

I tried different PSUs, different Video cards.

Any idea on what the reason is?

Check to see that the CPU heatsink is connected to the right header. Some motherboards are testy about it. Also, try switching out the RAM to make sure that the RAM is not the culprit. See if you have anything shorting out the motherboard (make sure that the motherboard is screwed in tightly and there's nothing touching it). Hope this helps.

The mobo is ok ( it works after abunch of tries).

The ram modules seem to be ok, I use them with no particular problem, but I will try to use only one.

I tried to upper and lower Vcore and I/O voltage, it has no effect.

The fan is on the right header.

Still trying to figure it out...

what kind of CPU is it AMD TBird? what kind of cooling do you have?

it might be that the CPU is getting too hot and within the 4-5 seconds it reaches a certain temperature and it automatically shuts down.
Most mobos have an auto shutdown when the CPU gets too hot.

Yeah. To elaborate a little more, though, all your PC needs to post is the mobo, cpu, 1 stick o' RAM and vid card. Unplug EVERYTHING else. Remove all cards, unplug power from IDE drives, unplug all cables from mobo. Then boot up. If it boots and stays on, then start adding 1 piece of hardware at a time until you find the culprit. Listen for any BIOS beep codes.

And just WTH is CompuWiz memory?

It's just regular RDR RAM, PC150 CAS 2. It's running at PC133 CAS2.

I hace a Duron, 700@1000, and it's pretty well cooled. No doubt on that.

What I do not get is why after a bunch of tries it boots up and works just fine.....

I don't mean to sound annoying, but are you 100% sure the CPU fan is in the right header? I once put a system together for a friend using an ABIT motherboard, and I had the same problem as you. Had to restart about 5 or 6 times to get it up and running. Turned out that the CPU fan was in the wrong header because there were like 3 of them on the board, and I used the one that was marked CPU header 1 in the motherboard manual.
