Computer Build Static Defenses

Hi AT,

I just built several desktops. And I've build several before. But after the build, I'm having what I think are static problems with one of them.

I turns on when I walk by or plug my phone into the USB chain (and there's a small spark to the USB connector). I think I have disabled wake on USB in the Bios. and I think I have disabled it on the mouse and keyboard in the OS.

So, my next theory is static problems.
How do I prevent this from happening. Is there a common build step/problem which I missed?

It is on a piece of cardboard on top of a carpet. I have verified the power outlet's ground is working. And, I am not sure what to do next.

Thanks,
-Mike

Not trying to be rude but I would make sure before coming here to ask for help. It is good to know for sure because for all we know could be the problem. Try plugging your USBs (sp?) into a HUB and the hub into the computer if you can't figure it out also.

Yes, my keyboard and Mouse are plugged into a hub. And I set the bios to not use S5. And turned-off all the wake-on options in the bios. So, I'm more sure than I sounded in the previous message.
But plugging my phone into the USB hub sometimes turns-on the computer.

So what is the problem?
Are you worry about the spark?

You discharge yourself when you touch the usb port, it is no big deal.
Usually I touch the computer case to discharge myself before touch the components, and during the winter months there is a nasty shock.

You should NOT be building computer on carpets floor!

The computer is built. I built it safely on a neutral table.

The computer turns-on sometimes when I walk-by and sometimes when I plug-in my cell phone to the USB hub.

I have disabled wake-on-USB and wake-on-LAN and my current theory is that it's a static problem.

I don't know how to mitigate this problem.

Your help is appreciated!

What type of surface is the computer sitting on? Do you have "feel" on the case?

I would check for faulty power and reset button on the case, sound like vibration is causing the computer to wake from sleep.

Put the machine on a wooden shelf disconnected the Usb cellphone, removed the Usb hub, and updated the bios.
Fingers crossed!

Is the outlet it is plugged into properly grounded? Could be a PSU issue as well.

After a weekend of testing via various removal and isolation, it looks like plugging my HTC One (Android Phone) into the USB hub is the trigger.

I have had no recurrences since Friday when I removed this part.

Sigh,

I normally have issues in the other direction: go to plug in a usb stick and short the whole damn thing, causing a restart. I generally just tap the connector onto the outside of the case for a second and then plug it in to prevent the issue, then get the humidifiers running for the rest of the winter.

Stupid fluffy carpet.

Yeah, I might just have to occasionally lick my phone to discharge it.
Or I'll just charge it from the outlet.
