Very good job! This kind of information is what people have been searching for, especially those who are not really familiar with computer hardware.

I never built and I read the guide, and to be honest I was confused in some parts.
It's probably easier to understand with all the parts in front of you though.
The explanation of power and data cables was the most confusing to me. Maybe because it went into explaining the stuff and not so much step by step plugging in.
It's the easiest (and that's good) guide I've seen so far though.

I know of a program called Diet Power that tracks what you eat & counts your calories, & tells you how much cal you need for a certain weight. (it tracks all food nutrition like protien, carbs, etc.. and vitamins).

Great thread! I'm going start sending some noobs (I was once one myself) this way. Some of the info needs a bit of an update but is still relevant to the concepts.

Jesus, how did I miss this thread when I was building my first computer last month? Good stuff.

Putting in Memory Sticks
I would like to say that my motherboard's setup was such that I had to put my memory sticks not next to each other but staggered. 1a, 2a, 1b, 2b. was the layout. All the videos I happened to watch assumed that the memory sticks went next to each other. Noobs like me are not good at dealing with variations on a theme.

Why is cooler paste is so hard to remove?
That stuff would not get off my fingers unless I scraped it off with paper towels. What scared me was that some of the videos said that if I got some on my computer parts, it was electrostatic and would wreck my precious (new computer) over time. I accidentally got some on the motherboard (back side part) but wiped off as best I could. You don't have to worry about messing with cooler paste unless you are overly ambitious like me and decide it's a good idea to overclock your very first homebuilt computer.

How to get free Shoprunner
I don't know where to put this, but I gotta say that when I ordered my parts from Newegg, being a Shoprunner member really did save me some cash. Shoprunner is basically Amazon Prime. but without the Amazon. I got my service for free because I have an Amex (from Costco). Don't know how long it will stay free.

How come everyone uses an antistatic mat/wrist strap in the videos?
and nobody in real life does? Is there a way to test whether something is zapped, and do tests on whether the antistatic stuff actually works? I used an antistatic mat/wrist strap because I read some stories that it makes a difference. I basically felt like I couldn't argue at this point.

Hope this helps some noob like me.

Followed this guide back in 2006 when I last build my desktop. Will read it again when I finally build a new rig this year. Cheers and thanks again mechBgon.

Hello, looks like nobody has been posting in this thread in a while. I have a really old computer, originally built back when we were still using XP (yes most of those specs at the bottom are accurate, but I have overclocked the CPU to 2.8). I now have the machine running 7 but need a serious overhaul. I want to keep the case because I love it (Antec Aria). The case limits me to a 300 W power supply (it is custom sized), but since I am not a serious gamer it should suffice (though I do want the best possible graphics card that can work with the build and power supply). I haven't built a computer for nearly 10 years so I have not kept up with the current hardware at all. Wondering if someone out there can give me some suggestions. Will need to purchase Windows 10 and would like to keep the hardware budget under $500 (might go a bit higher if it's worth it). Will need motherboard (micro ATX), memory, graphics card, processor (stock fan is usually fine). I can use existing HD and SSD (I use SSD for OS and HD for storage). Can't think of anything else I would need at the time. Thanks in advance for any responses.

You probably want to create your own thread in the computer building forum.

This thread is ancient, and I doubt many people even come into it anymore.
