I just built my rig w/ the following specs

shuttle ak35gtr
amd 1700xp
msi gf4 ti4400
40gb maxtor
sb pci 16
netgear fa11 ethernet card

The thing is my system use to freeze everytime i'd do something intensive (runs @ 41c under load), and the sound would just continuosly repeat. I figured this to be the infinite loop problem. So I set my sound acceleration to basic, so as to alleviate the problem. However it continued. I figured if it wasnt the soundcard (sound-card had worked fine on other via mobo after set to basic) it must either be the video card or the motherboard. After a while, my brother got tired of the freezing and did something (apparently he enabled the onboard sound and the raid), and everytime I'd boot up my computer it would say new pci multimedia device found, and we'd just hit cancel, and the computer never froze after that. However just recently the computer started acting up again. It would freeze after about 5 minutes of ie use, and anything that taxed the system (games for example). It would freeze, then the screen would turn black and the monitor indicator light would turn yellow as if recieving no signal, then i would hit a few keys and the indicator light turned green as if back on, but all i could notice on the screen was some distortion on the screen (either 2 or 3 lines up top, or a pixel in the upper left-corner of the screen). I have no idea what's wrong w/ this machine. Anyone out there have similar probs w/ either of these components? I have an old video card, I guess I could i give that a try. I'm runinng win 98 se. Thanks

You minght have to pin point the problem by removing all devices and leave just the video card first.

It has been a while since last time I am on win98se, but I notice Highpoint controller does NOT like to share IRQ w/ any other device (BX6-2 era). Usually Abit has its Highpoint sharing IRQ w/ PCI 2 or PCI 3 slot.

Go to device manager and view the IRQ list. See if your Highpoint is sharing IRQ w/ any devices. If so, remove that device and see how it goes.

If it doesn't, then simply remove all other device besides video card and start from there.

Note: Win98se is not very good w/ resource management. Even if you enable the ACPI in your BIOS.

ps. If lock-up occur while you are using NIC, then you might have problem w/ FA311 card.

UPDATE: I started from scratch, using just my vid-card, mobo, cpu, and ram. I was installing win98se when I got a BSOD w/ the following message:

A fatal exception OE has occured at 0028:C0051EF in VXD VMM(01) + 000041EF. The current application will now be terminated.

I hit enter, and got the same message again. I hit enter again and the screen went black just like it did before. Maybe it's bad ram??

Just spoke to the crucial guy, and he told me it's an OS problem. He said I needed to upgrade my os the preferably XP. Maybe that's the solution. Will keep updated when I get a chance to get XP

If your sound just repeats over and over when doing something extensive it's usually a heat issue. On my current crap comp whenever I used to play CS for too long my voodoo3 (ha ha ha) got ridiculously hot and froze my comp and the sound would repeat over and over. Maybe it's the same for you.

Right now in my bios my temps are showing at 38c idle, 41 load, and the vid card is the MSI (Anandtech rated it as the coolest running 4400). I have 2 intake fans and 2 exhaust fans, and the comp sits right next to a window a/c unit.

I had the same thing happen to me a month ago when I was trying to play a new game. It turns out that it was because I was FSB overclocking. When I set me CPU back to it's intended speed, it was fine (but my CPU was not powerful enough to play the game).

Get a program like DOC mem and run stress tests on your RAM modules. I've had two different mods go on me over the years. Power, heat, and RAM issues are a pain. Best to eliminate it from the list of could-be's by testing it.

If you want to go the software route, make sure you have all the latest patches and drivers for everything in your machine, especially win 98.

Also, try playing the game with all background programs turned off. If you are using Direct X, try open gl instead--that's helped me out in the past.

Good luck, and I know how you feel. I just built a system and it can't do any of the things I built it for because of heat issues. Off I go to the computer store to buy system fans...

Ram does go bad. I build a system 6 months ago that would give a fatal exception error while trying to install the OS. I changed out the ram and everything installed just fine.

UPDATE:

I did a fresh re-format and re seated the video card and ram, and installed fine. I'm not getting anything that looks like hardware problems, but right now i'm currently using my onboard sound (C-Media) and it's freezing when I do anything intense, but it's not the same freeze. Here the screen just freezes up like it's either a software or heat issue. I don't think my hardware's bad, I think it's time for a new OS. 98 just isn't stable enough. Comp also freezes when using the sb pci 16 card, so i don't think it's the onboard sound. Ordered xp from newegg...just gotta wait till then I guess. I'll post again once I get it.

Appears to be bad ram. Ran Doc Mem from Simmtester.com (sp) and out of 4 tests my ram failed 4, and passed none.
