SPECS

amd 64 3000+ s939 stock (not venice) with zalman alcu heatsink
viak8t k8t800
2x 512mb patriot pc3200
radeon 9800pro 128mb agp stock
80gb ide harddrive
cd/dvd rom combo
antec smart power 400watt with 23a on the 12v (according to the sticker)

The way the computer crashes is that it makes a loud beep and usually the screen turns black, but sometimes it freezes on the last screen for a long time. It used to get vpu errors occassionaly before I turned vpu recover off. Sometimes the computer will crash after being on only for a little bit, but usually it crashes after a long period of gaming and will keep crashing upon resetting unless allowed to rest for a while.

It crashes only during games (warcraft 3: the frozen throne, civ 4, and css are the games that are played on this computer); I've yet to see it crash while browsing or running stability tests. For example, I recently ran prime95 for almost 20 hours without it crashing.

I've switched video cards but the computer still crashed sometimes. I think there is something conspicuous about the cpu temps; it idles around fifty and hovers around 70 during prime95 but doesn't crash. Overheating would explain the beeps. If this is the cause of the problem, how do I go about fixing it? And if it isn't, what else could it be?

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: The computer also crashes without beeping, where the screen silently goes black. Just a few minutes ago it crashed without beeping and Abit's EQ had shown the cpu temp to be at 60 degrees celcius (the shutdown point is 85) just a few minutes prior, so perhaps there may be other problems. Also, I forgot to mention that the computer doesn't fully shutdown when it crashes. I have to shut it down by holding the button down before I can turn it back on or I can simply press the restart button.

I've had the computer since early January of 2005, and it hasn't always been doing this. So I think it is installed properly.

That's pretty hot my friend....

Reseat the Heatsink to the CPU....make sure you have good thermal paste around (arctic silver 5)

yes you can, make sure both the surface of the CPU and the heatsink is squeeky clean (by cleaning it with 70-90% isopropyl alcohol and cutips/eye glass wipers/coffee filters). Also read the instructions....most of the time, the paste must be at least 1 1/2 rice grain in size (might vary). It must be applied first on top of the cpu, let the Heat sinkdo the rest when it sits on the cpu, so it can be spread easily without any chance of collecting air bubbles.

good luck

After reseating the hs, the temperatures dropped to 40 C idle and 55 C load, but it just crashed again, this time without beeping. What can I do now?

memtest is a good once, youll see if your rams the culprit.

you can also look up the beeps it makes, if it beeps, and if its a code or if its just... beeping.

also your PSU seems more then powerfull enough, although it wouldnt hurt to check with another PSU if you have one laying around. maybe its undervolting...

I ran memtest86 once with 0 errors. I'd rather not swap psu's unless I no choice. Is there a program that tests the psu's stabillity?

Have you looked at the event logs? (control panel, admin tools, event viewer - app log and system log). These can often give vital clues to problems.

Also, check your disk space and do a defrag. My Civ4 suddenly started crashing on me recently. My event log said disk space was low even though there was about 2 gig free. I uninstalled some stuff and now it runs fine.

Give it a try.

There's nothing under app log and system log. I have 43.8gb free, so I don't think I need more disk space.

My via board didn't get along with my 9800pro.

When you switched videocards to test, what was the other card you tried?

No. I don't know why a compatibilty issue would arise now when it's worked fine before though.
