Computer Doesn't Boot..

First, the specs:
480 watt PSU (I believe it's a Thermaltake)
1 GB Patriot RAM
Soltek SL-K8-AV2-RL mobo
AMD 3400+ Winchester
Leadtek 6600 GT vid card
Seagate 7200.8 SATA hdd
NEC 2500a dvd

I think that is enough information, but the problem is that when I hit the power button on the computer it will turn on and the lights on the fans will turn on for about a half of a second and then the whole system turns off. I tried replacing the PSU with another and this still happens. My guess is that the CPU is bad and I need to RMA it? Any suggestions people?

Doubtful that its the CPU, as those things rarely arrive or go bad.

I'd take a close look at the mobo/psu/ram. Do you have another working machine handy that you can start swapping parts for?

Ya, I think. The only problem is that mine is a socket 754 and the other is 939. I can still test the RAM and hdd and all that, but the mobo and cpu I can't .

I just had a problem that's the same--have you tried testing the computer with just the PSU, mobo, CPU, RAM and Vid card only?

With my setup, my videocard had died, so when I pulled the videocard, the computer started up fine. You might see if a friend can test some of your components in their machine.

Also, can you test the PSU on your other machine? The PSU is usually the component that goes wrong, but I've seen motherboards also fail, preventing boot and, in my case, my 6600GT dying did the same.

Although you have swapped it, it still sounds like PSU.

Next likely culprits: mobo, poorly seated CPU heatsink (temp shutdown).

A similar thing happened to me. My PSU died, so I replaced it and the board would still not POST. I later found out that when the PSU died, it killed my video card. As soon as I removed it, the board went throught the POST procedure just fine.

OP: Try removing the video card and see if you can hear the beeps from the board going through the POST procedure.
