Computer doesn't start up after Catalyst install... what's wrong?

Hello all,

I'm getting pretty annoyed trying to get this to work and admittedly didn't search past posts thoroughly, so forgive me if I'm asking a question that's been answered.

I exchanged my mobo, because of the intel chipset problem, and since I had to reinstall the OS, and the new SSDs had just come out, I figured I'd finally give in and get one and also finally install Win7.
So, install goes fine, the SSD seems absolutely amazing, but I can't install the graphics drivers.

Here's my setup:
Asus P8P67
i7-2600K CPU
16GB RAM
128GB Crucial M4
Radeon HD 5850
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I downloaded the latest drivers available on AMD's site, installed them, but the computer doesn't boot afterward.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Well is there an error message or something when it boots? Need more info.

No, nothing at all. Windows begins to load and then the screen just turns dark and nothing happens at all. The computer doesn't reboot, nothing happens.

This happened to me a few months ago, with a VisionTek AGP 2600 Pro card, using the newest drivers off of VisionTek's web site. I'm not sure what the problem was.

I had to resort to using the older drivers off of the CD that came with the card.

did you try JUST the driver file from the website? check your startup & recovery settings and make sure it's not set to auto reboot on bsod. then you should be able to find what the error is at least.

I'm pretty sure I did. The driver alone is something like 70MB, right? I'll check again tonight.

It's set to not reboot on BSOD and the PC isn't rebooting at all, it just sits there. It's bizarre.

Reboot to Safe Mode, run Driver Cleaner and reinstall?

How about an earlier set of Catalyst drivers, instead of continuing to try installing the latest ones?

70Mb sounds to me like everything including CCC, and not just the drivers themselves.

70MB sounds large to me too, but according to (http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx#2), the 70.5MB package includes display driver only.

I did try the drivers on the CD that came with the card, which are definitely older, but I'll try the 10.1 tonight and see if I have any luck with those.

oh, i misunderstood. i thought your computer was actually doing a bsod and rebooting.

out of curiosity... have you disabled hot swap mode for your drives? should be able to in the bios. i had a vertex 3 like completely freeze my desktop on my sb for up to 3 minutes before it became usable again. after i disabled the hot swap in the bios for all of the sata ports, it went away. not sure if the same bug affects the m4 or not, but it's worth a try.

No, but I'll check it out tonight.

Have you tried plugging the monitor into a different output from the video card? The last time I had this happen while updating drivers, the driver swapped the primary display to a different output port. Try swapping your output until you see something on screen, then make the adjustments in CCC to use the output you want to use.

Hmmm... Interesting idea. It didn't occur to me because I normally have two monitors connected to this PC, so one will at least come on but right now the second one's dc'd. Still, when a monitor isn't active, it tends to go into power-save mode. Mine didn't, which should mean it's still receiving a signal.
I'll definitely try, though. That would be simpler than anything.

What video connection are you using between the monitor and the video card? VGA, DVI, HDMI, Displayport? Try using a different output. Also check your monitor once you swap cables and make sure the input is set to the correct device.

DVI and it works fine before installing the ATI drivers.

Maaan, I'm such an imbecile! As it turns out, once the drivers were installed, display output was switched to the monitor I thought wasn't connected. It looks to be fine.

I need a drink.

Happy to say computer works beautifully. The M4 is ridiculously fast with this setup. Thought it was too much money to spend on a drive but it's worth every penny. I hope the performance doesn't degrade much over time.
