Computer freezes for 10-15 seconds while CDROM spins up and down and up again. Any idea why? (Asus50x)

This happens at odd times...no particular pattern I can see the most recent was while windows was booting, my background was up with my mouse cursor on it, but no start bar or icons.

The CDROM started to spin up...didn't sound like it got all the way to 50x, and then spun down again. Then it spun up again..go going pretty fast, then the computer "unfroze" and finished booting.

During the freeze time my mouse cursor wouldn't even move.

Sometimes it'll happen when I put in a CD and auto play is suppose to happen.

It's an Asus 50x, I tried to use CDspeed.exe, but since learned that's only really for the 45x....might I have screwed up my drive?

Bootup: Usually when Windows is detecting IDE devices they start spinning. It shouldn't happen that long, but there *is* a pause while it is starting and stopping, but usually barely noticable. Try going through the BIOS and checking that all settings are correct.

CD inserted: A friend of mine had a similar problem with his 48x drive. Went away suddenly though, try turning Autoplay off.

Try reinstalling drivers, or try removing device from System and letting Windows redetect.

If it happens during bootup, the most likely cause is that in your BIOS you have your CDROM set to be the first option to boot off of, instead of your HD. This used to happen to me until I changed it to the HD to be the first option to boot off of. Look in your BIOS and it should be under something like "Boot Sequence"

I had the same drive (ASUS 50X), and it did a similar thing. But only when a cd was in it. Whenever I tried playing any game just about and had to access the cd. It would wind up, then down, up, then down. Freezing my computer while doing so. I never could get it fixed. BTW is your asus 50x loud as a bioche? I could barely stand mine. Might of had a bad drive or something. Please let me know.

My boot order is Floppy, CDROM, SCSI. And I want it that way, this is well after that point though. Windows is already mostly loaded. Thanks for the help though.

SerraYX might be right...I can't specifically think of any other two times...

Yeah it is quite loud....odd because I was told it's fairly quiet....

The loudness is why I tried CDspeed.exe I hoped if I slowed it down a bit it would be quieter...

Ok thanks. I don't know about the spinning up thing. Like I said I had a similar problem but not at bootup. I finally ditched mine and got a Kenwood 72X. Super quiet, and have had zero problems so far.

Hi
I gues You have an ATAPI Asus CDROM. I know this behaviour with DMA Problems on the IDE Bus or with safedisk2 CDroms. If the CDRom is safedisk2 return it to your dealer. If its a DMA Problem, you can
1. try another IDE cable and a different lay
2. disable DMA in devicemanager, with VIA Chipset in dmatool
3. better turn off UDMA in BIOS and set the Transfer to PIO4 (there is no loose in speed !!)

What is "safedisk2"?

Yeah it's an ATAPI CDRom, I'll try out the DMA thing.

I had the same problem, less severe. I think what I did was under the CD-rom property in Device Manager, enable "synchronous transfer". Then the spinning up stopped.

I have a Teac. Try it.

I have the asus 50x too. When ever I put a disc in and I have winamp going at the same time ,Winamp freezes (the song pauses) for about 10 seconds. Is this because "DMA" is enabled or is it cause "Auto Insert Notification"is enabled? When I insert a cd into my cd-burner it dosnt do this so WTF?

My Config:
Asus cdrom---Ide 1 (master)
sony cdrw----Ide 2 (master)
HD 1---------Ide 3 (master)
HD 2---------Ide 3 (slave)

IDE 3 and 4 is the highpoint raid controller.
