Hi guys. I've run into an issue that I haven't been able to figure out what is the cause yet. I've been working on computers for a long time so I've done all the basic troubleshooting and all the advanced troubleshooting I could think of. With none of that giving me any errors now I turn to the collective goon brain for an answer.
I've built a system for my parents, here are the specs:
Pentium D820
2 gigs of HPbranded D9 Micron ram (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...8928436-8882845)
Intel® Desktop Board D945PSN
radeon x1300 512mb PCI-E video card (bought it used)
Hatatchi 320gb SATA HD
Belkin Wireless Pre-N desktop card
LG DVD 16x burner
I've reinstalled the OS 3 times trying to get the issue to clear up while I was troubleshooting. Twice I used Windows MCE 2005 then currently I have Windows XP Pro installed.
I have also updated the motherboard to the latest bios revision which was 7/20/2007
Here is the issue:
The system gets unstable and hangs and then looses vga to a black screen when there is a large amount of programs being run. Sometimes it will come back from the black screen and you can resume use and close things down, but it still seems shaky. Sometimes it just stays at a black vga screen and only a reboot will fix it.
I've removed one of the sticks of ram and it seems that the frequency of this occurring is less, but it still does occur. It is able to resume from the hang/blackout.
I've ran the full PCCHECK suite along with PRIME95 and Memtest86. Not during any of those tests did it fail. I've also ran drive fitness test on the new HD and still no errors show up.
One point of notice is that sometimes the post Intel logo is graphically corrupted. I've seen this on other systems before when there is say an ATI card in an NVIDIA chipset based board. The systems that have the mixed chips usually always works ok when its in windows, but just have a weird looking post screen.
I'm slightly suspecting the videocard as the problem, however I'm not sure why it would cause the system to hang.
Prime95 stress tests didn't cause the computer to lock up, but when I manually run a stress test (open 45 iexplore.exe 's multiple sessions of word, excel, and just about any other random program i can click on) the computer shits the bed.
Unfortunately I don't have another pci-e card I can swap at the moment to try to test that, but I may have to break down and buy one to try.
I've also reseated the ram and the video card but still the same issue persists.
Does anyone have any clues/experience with anything like this?
