Computer illiterate needs help installing cd rom!!!

I have an old HP Pavillion 8250, the first cd drive died and replaced it , the 2nd one
lasted a couple years then died. The computers been sitting for a year waiting
for me to fix. I bought a new cd drive. The trouble is I cannot get windows (98) to
recognize it. I tried all jumper settings. I tried manually , it still doesnt recognize it,
but asks if you have disk, but I cant put in disc as it is the only cd drive. There is a floppy
drive also on this computer.
Any suggestions appreciated. I really just wanted to start over and reformat hard drive but the recovery is a disk. Is there anyway to do it with a floppy???

I'd try replacing the IDE cable. Also make sure the cable is connected in the right direction. The pin 1 side of the cable (usually with a red line along it) should be on the side of the connector closest to where the power connector is. The motherboard's connector should be labeled with a small 1 on one side of the IDE connector to tell you which way to plug the cable in there.

If it's the only device on that IDE cable, the CD-ROM's jumper should be set to master.

I don't recall Win98 needing drivers for CD-ROM drives, it should recognize it on it's own.

What Nohr said. In addition, is the CD-Rom being recognized by the bios? When you boot up, do you see it listed on the bios screen? If not, it is not configured/installed correctly. Follow the above instructions if not recognzed by the bios.

ounds like bios isn't recognizing it correctly, Most bios can be gotten into by holding delete at boot, tho with yours it may be something else to get into bios, you can look on the corresponding website of the motherboard maker,ie; HP = www.hp.com etc...

That error is because of your networking files/settings(corrupt file or something), try reinstalling all the Network protocols, and adapters.

You shouldn't need drivers for you CDrom unless you are booting from a dos floppy disk, if that is the case you can download a premade boot disk like Madboot or Bootdisks.com.
