Computer just wont connect on @home

Here is my situation. I have 2 computers right now. The one I'm ussually at is the one Im sitting at right now and Im connected to @home or comcast or whatever it's called now and everything works fine. I have my computer name and "@home" workgroup entered in the network id thing and all is well. So a few weeks ago i put together a computer from some parts i had laying around the house. Its a 900mhz tbird, Asus motherboard, ect. Its only about a year old. So anyway, I want to put both computers on cable, but I dont have the funds to buy a router right now. So I figured I'd use the other computer to do ICS. So I installed 2k and put in a network card. Entered my computer name and workgroup and plugged a network cable directly into the modem....nothing. I go into ipconfig and see nothing. I then look again it is has assigned some random IP address and it isnt connecting to the net. So I try putting in "@comast.net", "@comcast", "comcast.net", "comcast" as different workgroups and still nothing. So I plugged my other computer back in and I had no trouble, so I knew that cable was working. So I fired up ipconfig on this computer and manually entered the settings that I saw there into my win2k box...still nothing. So I upgraded the entire system to XP, thinking that 2k was misbehaving or whatever, and that still didnt do it. I retried everything I mentioned before and nothing seems to work. I have tried both a dlink and a linksys network cards but with no luck. Any suggestions? I've asked before, but I've tried everything people suggested. Please help.

Try releasing your IP on your main computer then connect your 2nd computer and boot up.

To release your IP on your main machine go to Start-->Run, type 'cmd', click ok.
Type 'ipconfig /release'.

If you can get on the internet with your old computer but not the new one @home uses the mac# of the nic card to connect so you have to use the same network card on the the computer you want to use ICS on I hope this helps

thats good to know, but I havent even gotten that far yet. I still cant get the old computer(the computer that is to become the gateway) to connect to the net. I tried releasing the IP and that didnt work. So I reformatted and reinstalled XP again and still no luck. I dont know what is different of this computer. Does anyone know if @home or comcast or whatever had XP compatible installation software? i hate to do it, but if using that will get it working then Im all for it. Also, about the network cards. Do you mean the network cards that are connected from one PC to the other have to be the same or the network card that is in the gateway pc that plugs into the modem?

If you call @home and tell them you got a new computer or a new nic card they can reset the mac address for you or just look around for a router they are less then $100 and most of them do mac cloning. And I'm taking about the nic card that go's to the modem

Im using identical nic's in each machine, but it still doesnt work. And I dont want them to reset anything that would cause me to not be able to get online with this pc directly into the internet if something bad were to happen to the other computer. This never happened before, thats why i dont get it.

You have two NICs with the same MAC address?

Maybe you don't understand each nic card has it owe mac address put on by the people that make the card no two cards have the same mac address went you connect with the nic card on your old computer it reads that mac address on that card so you connect to the internet.Went you use a new nic card it will see a another mac address.So @home won't let you on the internet.if there any way for me to get hold of you i be more then happy to help you .
