Okay, new PC (Specs in signature) Vista BSOD constantly with any music playing or video, other times its random.

I went back to XP SP2, WMP works and videos work, but now its just random reboots, no bluescreen this time (although XP starts in like 15s vs about 90 for vista)

BSOD error report with vista gave this

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 124
BCP1: 00000000
BCP2: 86BB85C8
BCP3: B2000000
BCP4: 00000175
OS Version: 6_0_6000
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1

I ran memtest for around an hour and a half and there were no problems what so ever

What next?

Intel e4300, 320GB Seagate SATA2, 2x1GB DDRII 667MHz, nVidia GeForce 7600GS, Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev 1.3

You can try, at your own risk, upping the ram voltage. I have had machines that didnt give the ram enough power when set to spd. Try setting it manually to speced voltage, see if that helps. If not bump it a notch.

Are you oced?

I had some reboot/shutdown issues with my 965P-S3. I ended up having to get it replaced. Cost me $10 and some change, as well as a month of waiting and a heck of a lot of wasted time. I've read others have had similar problems with the S3/DS3 series. I hope that's not the case for you, but be mindful of the last day you can get a replacement from your retailer.

Yea, is the mem speced at 1.8? You can set it manually to 1.8 first and see how it goes. Mabye loosen the timmings a bit, check what the specs for timmings and run at that. Have you checked if you have the lattest bios?

Is the psu clean or dusty, just a after thought!

ran memtest for about 90 minutes with no errors. Tried one stick of RAM, still crash. Does it with both my Audigy 2ZS and Onboard realtek ALC883.

Figured one major thing - seems to only reboot when any movie/music is playing in the background (WMP, iTunes) for awhile. no music/movies, no crashing. both vista and xp

Have you tried testing your ps rails for voltagw while the system is idle and under load? I'm now suspecting that your ps is weak and not holding up under stress causing your system to undervolt and shut down.

Well you need to use a digital multimeter and attach the positive lead to each of the different rails while you watch the load on the meter to see if it is up to spec and/or if it is fluctuating with the load. A weak ps will fluctuate and not maintain voltage and if your machine shuts down during this then you absolutely know what the problem is. Sometimes the ps has to heat up just a little before it acts up.

RAM i'm not sure on. tested each of the 1GB sticks (both passed memtest btw) and individually they both crashed, so im not sure if its a RAM incompatibility or a motherboard problem

sounds like the multimedia is the issue. I use a machine which i keep free from updates and service packs (not net connected). i have found a lot of problems running audio software on the same system as certain games such as battle field and reason on the same machine will cause reason to randomly crash or the midi to lock and jam the sound card (this too was an audigy) so there could be a common dll or something which generates the same problem.
funnily SP2 caused me loads of problems with reason which lead to a re-install of XP...... out of interest which version of XP and vista as the one that had probs has XP PRO and gives the same prob with vista business...... this was frustrating me so much i built a seperate games machine and got a laptop for general internet use.
you could try no sound card and mobo sound and see if you get the same problem.............

try disabling all sound to eliminate the audio cards. if that works un-install any non standard media apps inc media 10 on XP and re-enabling the soundcard/s. I found that when firefox updated with media player 10 a few months back it fried reason and BSOD my machine (rolled it back to a restore point and all was fine).

see the thing is is it is both onboard and the audigy in both xp and vista, all with clean installs (2 or 3 times each) sometimes with sofware installed, othertimes just with the OS and no drivers (vista) all leads to the same error
