I bought a graphics card (9800 PRO) off an ebay sight and installed it today. Everything works fine until i try to load halflife 2. When i load that game the computer stops working ( i know because the iTunes music stops) and the screen goes blank, 10 seconds later the computer restarts.

I then decided to not load halflife, but get on with some work, so i copy a quite long email into word to check its world length and as soon as it is pasted completely the computer goes through the same booting process again.

What is wrong, im going to try a driver reinstall tomorow to see if it helps. Is the card bust (it was overclocked by the original owner, but only up 10 MHz, so i wouldnt expect that to be the problem, but to make sure i put it back to its original clockspeed with no luck). Any ideas?

I had problems with my ATI 9700 with my VIA chipset motherboard
I tried everything twice, even got a more powerful PSU and even things people suggested I knew was a bunch of bunk
Then I got a chance to try it in a NVIDIA chipset motherboard in an emachine with a minimal PSU and it worked fine.

You might want to post your motherboard type, if you have a VIA chipset I'd totally suspect that as being the issue, but then again there are some ATI driver versions have problems newer is not always better.

or have a look here

or

http://forums.techpowerup.com/

to see what version a drivers people have the best luck with that card

yup, its a via chipset. (A8V-Deluxe). I have another computer ill try it in. Dont know what chipset it is, its made by gigabyte, ill check when i get home.

It could be insufficient power, ill try unplugging a couple of Hd's and cdrom drives.

Dont think its overheating because there are plenty of fans in my computer and i just vaclume cleaned it for dust. Its set to the standard clockspeed as well.

Was your computer working O.K. before you installed this new card ?

If so, then it almost has to be either you followed the wrong procedures in uninstalling your old video card and it's drivers and installing the new video card and it's drivers OR you have purchased a defective video card.

I would highly suspect the latter. When you buy something second hand, be it automobile, wife or hushand, or computer parts, you are USUALLY buying someone else's problems.

Ok, i tried to uninstall-reinstall the drivers, but it didnt help a thing.

The computer worked fine before i bought the card. Even though i know there is a lot of junk on ebay, the guy i bought it off has almost 500 ratings and only 2 of them are negative (hopefully there is a good chance of getting my money back if it really is bust).

regarding the via chipset, the weird thing is that my old graphics card is the radeon 9600 and that has worked without a problem for two years now. Next ill check power.

I've had ATI Radeon 8500 cards work fine on VIA chipsets, I'm just saying I've been thru something similar and spent a lot of time switching powersupplies, changing every bios setting, trying different drivers, when I should have just checked how it worked with a different chipset first.

My friend got a 9800Pro and his machine kept crashing and rebooting because it didn't have enough power.

It usually happened while he was in games though. How many watts is your PSU?

I tried unplugging all but the main hd as well as all CD/DVD drives and it didnt help. Another reason im doubting its the PSU is because i used the same computer with a radeon 9800 XT 256MB without a problem (it was running on a 1024x1280 screen though, may even have been 768x1024, now its on a 1200x1600). Im getting a more powerful PSU in a couple of days though.

My current PSU is a LC-POWER 550W (it does say something about 304W on the unit though?)

Start > control panel > administrators tools > Event viewer look at the times when it crashes and see what is happening

I believe I had that problem before, and I have a VIA chipset mobo. I believe I turned off error reporting or something like that. Also, my videocard fan died not long after that, so I bought a new one, and havn't had a problem since then of any kind.. So that could also be the reason, overheating.

Make sure you have the latest via chipset drivers as well as the latest ati drivers. I believe the catalyst control center lets you see your video card temps in the overdrive section. I have a 9800 pro that I used to upgrade a Dell from a GeForce MX440, which is quite a performance jump. Which leads me to ask why you are changing from a 9600 to a 9800 pro?

where do you turn off error reporting?

I upgraded to the 9800 because im getting a second computer in my room, but didnt really want to spend a lot of money on it so i found the 9800 on ebay for a good price and since its better than the 9600 im using it as an upgrade in my better computer and the 9600 goes in my second computer

Today i tried installing it in my parents AMD 1.7 GHZ 512MB ram computer, then let it run for app. 3 hrs. Afterwards i played farcry with all graphics settings set to high and it played with no problem at all. Im going to guess that it has to be the VIA motherboard. I hope gigabyte dont have the same problem.

Turn off that VPU thingy in the catalyst CC (cant remember what its calle). I had something simular happen when I had a 9800 pro. I was using an Intel chipset BTW.

If running WINXP go into My Computer Properties(right click on My Computer and select properties). From there go to the Advanced tab and then go to settings under Startup and Recovery. From there make sure "Automatically Restart" is unchecked under System Failure. Let me know how this works out for you.
