Computer lockups

This has been happening ever since I built the rig and its been pissing me off. I noticed that ever since I upgraded to SP2 after reformats the crashes happen more often. I usually only crash when I am multi tasking stuff like for example: two games at once etc. Sometimes my computer just locks up and I hear sound out of my speakers. Other times it just restarts completely and re-boots itself back up.

Specs:

Opteron 165 dual core non oced
2gb pc-4000 ram
DFI lanparty
7800gt
SB audigy
XP pro SP2

I ran memory test a while ago when I first started getting these reboots and no errors popped up. Everything seems to be at the right temps, nothing to hot or anything.. any ideas?

edit: trying the sound to standard acceleration under dxdiag, will report back if I crash. Also trying the AMD fix and the Microsoft fix. Chipset drivers are also installed.

1) does the DFI have all four of its power cables hooked up, including the sneaky floppy-drive-type one above the top PCI-E slot? What brand/model of PSU are you using, anyway?

2) what brand/model of RAM and are you giving it healthy doses of voltage?

3) try with the Audigy removed

------

1) yes all 4 and that sneaky floppy drive
2) g skill ddr400

3) I tried it with audigy removed a while back when it was doing this and it didnt fix it.

Also.. right now i'm trying it with 1 stick of ddr400.. the voltage was/is: DRAM 2.66v (if thats it). All my timings are on default since I have no idea how to set them correctly, meaning auto.

4) power supply is... Aspire

Had it in the past and it worked fine. I originally ordered a 120$ antec but when it arrived one of the fans didnt spin so I used this one that came with the case.

Just got a WoW error if this has anything to do with it.

This application has encountered a critical error:

ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program: D:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 001B:0070B148

The instruction at "0x0070B148" referenced memory at "0x00000020".
The memory could not be "read".

WoWBuild: 5302

edit: as it appears.. currently my memory is something like this.. there is orange slots and yellow slots. its like orange (1gig ddr400)| yellow (1gig ddr400) ----- orange (empty) | yellow(empty).. when I moved the yellow gig of ram into the unoccupied slot as soon as I loaded windows it completely restarted the machine. Now I guess the problem is figured out kind of.. is it a motherboard problem or a memory problem?

kk i'll run it again today for few hours each.. i'll even switch the memory stick to the other slot that it kept freezing on and see if it brings up any errors.

i've been having the same problems that you're experiencing with my rig. i had it for about a month and over the weekend it started crashing and restarting after i burned a disc. i'm thinking that there's something wrong with the memory sticks. let me know if you come up with anything. everything is stock/default (no OC).

my system specs:

amd opteron 165
gskill 2GBHZ (the same ones you have linked)
abit AN8-32X
eVGA 7900gt
SB Audigy
XP SP2
CM real power 550w

i ran memtest86 for three passes and no errors came back. i think my problem may be heat related. i opened up the case and had a fan blowing towards the case and it ran fine for 3 hours and then when i turned the fan off it froze in about 15 minutes. im not sure what to do now, should i RMA the processor for running hot and crashing? currently i have two 120mm fans (one for intake and one for exhaust) and i would have thought that would have been enough to keep it cool.

No memory errors here neither.. ran it for a few hours. I then reformated and have not been getting a crash since. I think I had a crash like once a week with service pack 1.. and when I upgraded to SP2 it started to crash like every 10 minutes, try it if you want and let me know whats up.

edit: nvm, I had one hard crash. I tested WoW and HL2 EP1 and when I minimized out of WoW and into hl2 ep1 after a few seconds my comp restarted. I'm still guessing its either a) a weak powersupply thats not giving enough power (?) or faultey memory or maybe auto settings for this ram makes it unstable.

edit 2) : a g.skill tech said try both ram sticks in the orange slots only. I'm trying it now with some timings I looked up for my board and so far no crashes, will keep ya posted.

Found my problem.. One of my ram sticks is faulty. When they were both in I must of got 200+ errors non stop erroring till I quit memtest. I tried single and one of them ram for hours without errors, the other one had a spam errror flipout on test #5. I'll try without that stick and see if it still crashes I guess.
