Computer Lockups

Just today, the computer kept on locking up while I was typing up something in MS Word. I have no idea why. Occasionally the computer used to lock up once in a while during games and other applications. I thought it was the sound driver for SB Live value, which I did not upgrade but just used the one that came with XP Pro. I thought it was because of overclocking (it would not cold boot at 133+ FSB), so I made everything default which is just P4 1.6a. However, the lockups continued as I worked on my document. I don't understand why there would be lockups with no program besides MS Word running. I scanned for viruses with the most update NAV 2002 and nothing came out that seem to be the cause for system lockups. Could it be that previous overclocking has damaged my CPU? I checked the temperature and it never went above 49C-50C. I cannot believe this lockup problem is occuring again. I built this new computer because the same problem was happenning on the old system. The 'old' components that I am using for this new system is the sound card, NIC, mouse, keyboard, dvd rom, floppy, an 18 gig IBM hdd. Does anyone have any ideas? I am not even certain this is OS problem or hardware problem. One thing though, when lockup occurs, the USB MS Intelli Optical would shut off its lights. I am not sure if that will happen for any type of lockup. Not quite sure how the mouse power is regulated. If this is not the place for this help. Please let me know of a good place. I dont want to go to local best buy because its 60 dollars an hour and dont think they have 100% guarantee for repair. Thanks.

I agree it shouldn't be locking up at default! I think it's most likely something to do with your old setup since it was doing the same thing before. Two things you didn't mention about your old setup is are you using the same case (the reason I ask is your 1.6a temp is unusually high, something I would definitely look into), and did you do a fresh load of Windows when you upgraded? If Windows was at fault before and you didn't wipe and do a clean install it could be that. Well, it could be anything but I would check those two first.

I didn't have a problem with the WinXP SBLive driver, so that may be cool, you could update it to see.

My case and PSU are new. It's a Skyhawk aluminum case, 1 front fan, 1 side fan, 1 cpu exhuast, 1 slot fant, enermax 350W PSU with 2 fans in it.
I installed the new system using the new 80 gig hdd, so everything was installed clean.

Are you using the same motheboard as before you don't mention which motherboard you have.

Well it seems to me it must be one of the components you reused causing the problem. My money would be on the sound card. Try taking the sound card out and see if it affects stability.

Do you have a spare hd you could put in & remove that ibm?

I thought about that it could be the soundcard, but then the lockups don't just happen while there is sound playing.
The 18 gig IBM drive is just there so that I could access my files from old computer. I boot up and run programs from the new hdd.

If you connect you hdd (master/slave) via a common cable, if your new hdd is ATA 133, the transfer speed will
follow the lower one??

I think you can copy all files from you 18G to your 80G and remove the ibm hdd to see if there is anymore problem.
