Sue 3.5 inch Floppy disk makers also... lol

they flooded the world with disks which were supposed to give 1.44 MB of storage ... and gave only 1.38 MB! That too for well over 10 years!!

P.S. I dont actually remember reading on a Floppy Disk box about the no. of bytes in each etc. either!!!

I don't understand you people saying that all operating systems and practically everyone *except* hard drive manufacturers are wrong. Were you even around before hard drive manufacturers started measuring "1MB=1 million bytes"? Are you aware that it also goes against decades of convention? Are you aware that your system RAM is not measured that way?

Hard drive manufacturers decided one day to redefine megabyte and gigabyte for marketing reasons, despite the existing definitions already being in widespread use for years and years. It is as simple as that.

Aboroth is exactly right! It was entirely a marketing ploy by the drive mfr's to inflate their storage claims. Of course, directory structures and access tables also detract from the free space for user files - but not the absolute space. kilo, Mega, Giga, Tera etc. have had meanings specific to the computer field for just about ever in cyber time. What it means to the plebes is irrelevant.
. IAC, this should be thrown out of court forthwith...

40 x 2^30 Bytes
They should just start labeling Harddrives like that, it's make it real clear to a user...
not.

third paragraph, stupid.

The lawsuit brought by Los Angeles residents Lanchau Dan, Adam Selkowitz, Tim Swan and John Zahabian centers around the way that computer hard drives are described by manufacturers.

I hope this gets thrown out. We've been using 2^x for ages in measuring them, but HDs have been based on 10^x for about as long. Simple, and even the computer illiterate people I know understand it.

Most people still can't program a vcr. Unless your a geek like most of us forum members chances are you have no clue. Now that's why they are going to court because dell told them one thing and windoz said another. Put yourself in a endlosers place and your brand new computer with 200 gigs says 186 gigs in my computer. WTF I've been robbed. I expected this to happen years ago. (English is my 2nd language so my spelling might be wrong)

while that is all well and good it doesn't get around the fact that they tell you (if you care to look) exactly what they mean by 1 GB.

and yes, some space is lost to formatting.

i don't know what you guys problem
this is in our favorit
if they win, HD manufactory may start up to change
in the future you can go buy a 100gb hd, and it'll be 100gb hd space you can use in windows, not 93gb not 81gb...etc
i have they go to court and win
only HD maker use their own standard which is different then windows or memory measurement
