Computer Monitoring Software

Hello -

I work from home and remote connect to a workstation in my employers office. They want to put computer monitoring software on that computer to see how I'm using my time. That is completely okay with me, but I was concerned if the computer monitoring software on that remote computer will be able to see what I'm doing on my local computer if the remote session is open or even minimized. I just don't want them to have access to my personal information or passwords. Thanks a lot, any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

If they install something intended to monitor you, it probably DOES have the capability to monitor you when you're not connect, to search you drive, to monitor your keystrokes and everything else you ever do.

I wouldn't allow an employer to put a monitor on my home PC. They WILL have your personal passwords and screenshots of all your porn.

Seriously, run their software in a virtual machine, or get a separate computer... or just understand your employer could see *everything* ever done on your PC if they chose to.

Agreed 100%. If they wanted to monitor my machine, they better be supplying the machine, or paying me for mine. I wouldn't do anything not work related on the supplied machine.

Sorry, I'm a little confused, would the the computer that is located in office (outside of my house) be considered a virtual machine. I remote connect to it, through Microsoft Remote connection, from my home computer. They only want to put the monitoring software on the computer located in the office, not my home pc. Is this still something I should be concerned about?

I think you misunderstood the question. The way I read it, he is remoting into a machine at the office to do work, and the company where that machine is located (i gather they own this machine, yes?) wants to put software on this machine to ensure the OP is actually working while connected and not just connecting, minimizing and doing whatever on his own machine.

It really depends on HOW you connect to the remote machine, there are scenarios in which it might be possible, but MOST LIKELY, them being able to see anything you do on the computer that you are using to CONNECT WITH is very low.

The above still holds true though, do not let your employer install anything ON your personal machine, or they will be able to.

However in this case I think your privacy is intact. They are not doing anything they do not have a right to do, the machine you use within their walls is theirs and they can put whatever they want on it.

Thanks a lot for the responses. They do own the machine and of course I'm okay with them putting the software on there I was just unsure how most of this software worked and didn't want them to be able to monitor my home computer. Again, thanks a lot for the help!

I misunderstood. If you're using Microsoft RDP to connect to the system, there is no chance that the RDP connection can "reach back" and monitor what you're doing on your home computer.

However, if you have the RDP option to mount local drives on the remote machine enabled, monitoring software could catalogue and or copy files from the local drive.

If you're really concerned, dual-boot or run their software in a virtual machine.

I think you folks are confused, they aren't asking to put anything on his home, personal PC, this is going on their equipment AT the office he logs INTO.

Just use your own computer for your own personal needs. have your own mobile device next to you and they won't see what you do on there.
