my old power supply recently died and my computer wouldn't turn on, so i bought a new one.

i plugged it in to everything to see if it would run,and it did, so i turned it back off to plug my peripherals in. after that my computer would not turn on at all, no beeps or any noises at all.

i tried my new psu on my brother's computer, and it works fine so it cant be the psu in trouble.

so i think it is either the motherboard that died, or maybe my power switches at the front are messed up. how do i go about checking if my power switches are the problem and not the whole motherboard itself?

thanks

Yes, you just make a momentary contact the same as the switch does. Holding the contact for 3 to 5 seconds usually acts as a hard shutdown on most boards.

That said, if the power still does not come on, your old PSU may have taken other components with it. You would still need to independantly check your ram.

sorry i'm kind of confused...let me try to explain what i think you are saying

so theres 2 pins coming out of the motherboard that receive the PowerSwitch jumper, and you want me to make contact with the pin using the screwdriver, while the jumper is in there? how would i even touch it if the jumper is already in and connected?

First take note of which pins the switch is plugged into on the MB then, unplug the switch/jumper. Now, with the screwdriver in your right hand (only if you're right handed and it's Wednesday) momentarily make contact with both pins at the same time using the tip of the screwdriver. Got it?

The switch is a remote one meaning there is absolutely no chance of you shorting out anything critical as it is not part of the MB circuit.

ok i did that. nothing happened. put the power jumper back on and still nothing when i try to turn it on.

no fans or lights or any noises at all, this should be a motherboard problem right?

So you're saying that you took the jumper off the Power SW pins and made the momentary connection to try and start your PC and nothing happened?

That's a good sign that your motherboard is dead. As for the fans... No, the fans would not start spinning. Reason they wouldn't is because they are connected to the motherboard which just so happens to be fried. So basically, if the fans are getting power from the PSU directly (which some do) then they would be getting power BUT they would not start spinning because they'll only spin if the mobo tells them to.

Yes, you still need to independantly check the ram and GPU. They may have been damaged along eith the MB.
