This is not a hot deal for everyone but if you want to save a couple hundred a year there is a program that you can use to notify you of all incoming phone calls while online. I have tried it and it works quite well and also had caller ID with it. It is $50 a year which was two months bill for me for the extra phone line.

doesnt the new modem standard include the call waiting feature in the protocol? V.92 or v.44 or something? time to flash/upgrade your winmodem for you non-dsl'ers hehe

Yes there are free programs that do little more then let you know that someone is trying to call. The reason I chose this one was you can tell the caller to "call you back", or that "you will call them back", or to "leave voice mail. Also as noted as it also has caller ID and to me it was worth the fifty dollar a year fee.
I thought that anything saving forum members money was posted in "hotdeals"!!!

For me, the busy call forwarding on the phone number is $2.95 month, then I pay $3.95 a month for Pagoo. $7.00 a month is better than a second phone line, and Pagoo also takes a message when I'm talking on the phone so I don't have to have call waiting (which I hate). Pagoo also has some new program for internet phone calls but I haven't checked it out yet.

$2.95 for busy call forwarding... Ouch! Ameritech only charges 75 cents/month. Personally, I use Callwave because I'm cheap and waiting for dsl/cable.

Get DSL or cable you won't have any of this problem{hehe}. I actually save money by going with DSL.

Wait for the new upgrade/flashes/drivers for the new ratified protocols. The new protocol includes call-waiting-detection and hold. Will basically put these internet-hold companies in the garbage.

Basically the modem understands the signal for call-waiting (digitally) and the connection goes on hold. Dunno how that will work with IP. but who knows?

Also ups the upstream speeds a good 20-30% in speed

or another option, use www.evoice.com for busy answering or voice mail service for free. oh did i mention they they will pay for the call forwarding service for your line for free?

I have evoice and I must say that I LOVE their service. For the price of free, they cover every aspect (including paying the local carrier to offer ME VOICEMAIL!!!). It would be mighty nice, however, if they could let me make my own custom greeting rather than just my name, but for the price, I can't complain! Evoice also sends me a msg on my cell phone every time a voicemail comes!
