I have 4 of the same computers, basaically, but the problem computer I have I had to replace the HD a short while ago.

The computer POST hangs for 30-40 seconds every time when detecting the HD.

On the setup I have entered it as Auto, like my other compters (same mobo, bios, etc).

Is there something on the HD I need to do, or some kind of setup?

Is this typical?

That doesn't sounds very good. once the computer boots into windows, does accessing the drive cause delays as well? I would back up anything important on that drive and replace it, as soon as possible.

Actually, it has been this way since I installed it. No problems within XP at all, only a delay when booting up, and ONLY at the place where it checks to primary and secondary HDD devices.

I just thought maybe its the HD manufacturer.

Have SMART enabled perchance when it boots up? Does it do this on a fresh boot or on a reboot?

It is SMART capable but not eneabled. Should it be? I dont think any of the other machine have smart enabled, but then again, those machines have a different and older HD.

Does it run perfectly under Windows?

I was getting intermittent lockups/delays in Windows and a long boot up. When I undid and then reconnected the SATA cable, worked fine. May want to check your cables?

Yes, works fine, just a long time to boot up.

My other computers go past that section in the POST like in 1 second. Just trying to make bootup faster. I can try the cables, what can it hurt? Thanks.

This might not help but did you make sure the jumper on the hard disk is set properly to master or slave? Sometimes, if it's set to slave and no master is present, the BIOS will wait for a pre-determiend time for the master to detect and then move on to the slave drive and initialize that one as slave anyway.
