steam player app to run the games is a bit brittle.

I lost a game once and so I bought it on steam. I have windows 7 and windows 8 and it does not play at all on either one no matter all the tweaks I did to the files.

I later found the cd to the game and it works fine on windows 7 and 8.

I really think steam needs to stop messing with the source code of the games so much that makes them break all the time. Does not make any sense.

So I was using an overclock that previously had never had any problems. The overclock was 1275 and 1500 on my Asus DC2 Top 270X and this was the first problem. I ran Skyrim at stock settings and found no problems. Curiously I accidently clicked apply overclock at startup while I was resetting my saved overclock last night and did not find out until I restarted my computer again and was back in MSI Afterburner. I know they say to never use apply overclock on startup but there were no problems so it seems that my overclock is often stable but that under certain loads it might start to have crashes or other technical problems. That had nothing to do with the crashes but it does show that maybe my current mod load is more than my overclock has been through since I first used it.

I've little experience with OCing, but I have known some people to have issues with random applications crashing with certain clock settings...

If running it at lower speeds prevents crashing, I'd say you'll have to make due.

Going from 1175 to 1150 did not do anything so I am probably going to have to try to overclock with a lower VRAM overclock probably somewhere around 1475 or something. Although I have not even done anything with the voltage so maybe modestly increasing the voltage and see what I can get might give me some stability. Still I actually had not been playing Skyrim since like spring because of the need to understand how to mod and I am only running a basic mod selection right now as a test run even if some of them are more intensive. Also since I do not have much need for GPU overclocks when playing anything other than Skyrim or Planetside 2 I generally have not used any overclocks even when playing Planetside 2 as much as I do.

If your running your pc with any sort of overclock just take it to stock. See if the problem still persists.

Sorry if I am not good with writing form and grammar but in my 2nd post I did run it at stock setting and there were no problems for about an hour or so of me playing the game. With an overclock it crashed every time in the first few minutes. What is odd is that it ran perfectly on overclock for up to 8 hours at a time the last few days when I was playing so this is actually somewhat confusing.

Did you do other stuff like after booting disable antivirus and or other third party apps that like to run in the background?

remove from memory(TASKBAR):MBAM,spybot,weatherchannel,weatherbug,AIM,yahoo,MSN

Also does your system have a built in diagnostics in it to do a memory test?
I would do that next time after a crash.
