I have a friend that her computer just restarts whenever she plays DiabloII. It didn't do it at first, but started getting worse and worse until she couldn't play at all.
She has an Athlon system.

Me.. well, I've been playing the game a while now, and 2 weeks ago, I built an Athlon system myself. Well, just the other day, MY computer is starting to just REBOOT right in the middle of the game!! It's happened about 5 times now.

Could this be that Athlons are Suck?? Gawd I hope not.

My system is:
TBird 700@800 (small heat sink or I would run it faster)
Asus A7V
Asus 7700 GTS vid card
SB Platinum
Viking 256megs ram

This would be Major Suck if it was my AMD causing Diablo to restart..

could be heat related, considering you said you have a small HSF. try clocking down your proc to normal speeds and see if the problem continues.

Wait your overclocking your CPU with a small heatsink and blaming AMD because your system reboots? Clock it down to 700Mhz and if it still does it look at your video card drivers. You could also look at
1.Memory (clock it to 100Mhz)
2. power supply

I have a Athlon and play for about 5hrs 3 times a week and I got the game the day it came out, no problems.

Overclocking your cpu is causing your problem. I had exact same problem with celeron533a@800 and as soon as I set my cpu at 533, rebooting problem disappeared.

Yes, I've considered this, however, I leave me case lid off, and took the small fan off the heatsink and layed a 4" 1000cfs (just kidding) fan on the CPU. hehe, it looks totally funny too,
I agree it could be heat related, because I KNOW for a fact diablo II maxes the CPU to 100% utilization throughout gameplay.

I'll try clocking it back down to 700. YUK!!!

I do plan to get one of those Monster coolers from Computer Nerds... but until them, I'll have to SUFFER at 700mhz

I've considered the power supply too. I'm using an A500 Inwin with 250/w PS. This design was fine for P2-350 and TNT1, but todays periferals seem to be a lot more power hungry than the old days.

We need NEW Designed CASES for todays power hungry and heat generating systems!!

1) What cpu voltage are you overclocking at?

I get my Duron 600 stable at 900 with 1.75 volts and 950 only with 1.85 volts.

2) What bios are you running?

I get lockups during boot up and overall with 1004. 1004 or det3 618 also kept kicking me out of 3dmark200 mid bench. 1003 and det2 works peachy for me. I know others get 1004 to work fine though. You'll have to use aflash to manually flash back if you wish. The asus update in windows wouldn't go backwards for me.

3) What temp are you running? I've run my CPU up to 54C full load just fine in a hot room. Mostly 48C max now though.

4) Update your via drivers?

AMD CPUs don't have any problems with with Diablo 2. I have had it since it came out and it has never crashed once on my Athlon 650. I have played the game through multiple times. My Uncle has a K6-2 450 and has not had any problems either.

hi,

I've been playing Diablo II for quite a while (month or so) now on a Duron 650 overclocked to 800. Last night it locked up after about 5 minutes of play, which was really odd because otherwise it's run very well for hours at a time. I actually rebooted and played for about 3 hours after the lockup.

This does show that you can run DII just fine on an overclocked AMD chip.

One thing I failed to mention. I'm running Windows Millenium. DOH! My old system was windows 2000, and coincidently never had any problems.. but when I built my new system, I put WinME on it.
I've also recognized that the problem is occuring after I've "alt-tab" to windows and back into DII. hmmm... Quite a few blue screens too.

WIN ME SUX!!! hehe Stick with Win2000 if you have it loaded.
