Computer Repair prices

I recently fixed a computer for a person at work and am wondering what I should charge her.

I don't want to undervalue myself and I don't want to seem like I charge too much.

All I did was reformat and reinstall windows, drivers, OpenOffice and AVG. It was probably around 2 hours of work or so as a rough estimate. There was no backing up, it was just simply a format and install. I just want to get a feel for how much that process should be worth and how much other people on the forums end up charging their customers.

Thanks in advance!

Did she already agree to pay you something before you did the work? If not you did it for free.

I charge $40 flatrate for malware cleans (takes me about 2+ hours) and $50 for an OS reinstall. Yea, its very low compared to the going rate, but it is a side job. I don't advertise at all, I work on co-worker's PC exclusively.

I thought about advertising via CL with a bit higher rates, but I'm afraid it would burn me out in a few months time as well. Doing 2 PCs over a weekend kills any free time for family or PC gaming time that I'd had before doing this.

I charge $60-80 for a format/reload depending on the extent of the work.

Yes, girl is hot, pic attached (She's the one on bottom right of image). She agreed to pay me beforehand. I was thinking somewhere around $30-50.

This. You can't suddenly charge for something when you didn't negotiate the rate before doing it.

I think $50 is a fair price. That should include installing the OS, all drivers, antivirus, and MS Office (assuming they can provide this). All of them should be completely updated.

edit: never mind the updates. Just make sure windows is set to install updates automatically, including the optional ones, and leave it at that.

I charge family members at least $150/hr. Friends who won't come back again usually I do it for a fitty.

Charging $30 for 2 hours of skilled labor is a joke, don't sell yourself short.

tell her she has 2 options:

1) pay $50 or
2) go out to dinner with you

guarantee that you'll get that $50 fast and without hesitation

$75 is fair for that, which would be probably a couple hundred less than geeksquad, who not only charges stratospheric prices, but also nickels and dimes every step of the way (separate charges for the OS install, application install, etc).

That said, she looks young (not wealthy?), and I try to adapt my charges based on my client's ability to pay. I have clients that make 7 figures or more, and I charge them fair industry standard rates for outstanding service. I also make the same services available for much less to those in need who are paycheck-to-paycheck types. I find that in general, this is very helpful, and people tend to return favors enough of the time to make it worthwhile.

$50 sounds about right, especially since you probably just set the install and did other stuff w/o too much babysitting it.
