THe computer show in Monroeville (outside Pittsburgh) is pretty good and parking is free. Prices can be pretty competitive but you have to find a good dealer. Most people are shady tho... and they have no idea what they are talking about.

I was asking around about a problem I was having with a Shuttle SFF I was building (it kept restarting by itself). I figured it was the RAM (it was) but I wanted to make sure before I bought something. Anyway, most guys came up with some stupid suggestions. The one I found the best was when a guy asked me what kind of mobo I was using, power supply, etc. I told him it was a shuttle case and mobo barebones with nforce2, 200w power supply... blah, blah. So he goes into this rant about how Athlons need at least a 300W PS and that there is no way any case would come with a 200 watter. He basically said I was crazy for even trying it. I tried to correct him and explain what it was, but this guy "knew everything" so I laughed at him and left. Its really amazing how much these guys DON'T know.

Dumbest threads ever... why? They never include the location of the show in the title.

If I was a MOD I would be doing some banning...

I used to work for one of the vendors at the KPG and MarketPro shows (including the one in the Raritan area). Things are cheap but the things you buy are brand names you never heard of. Becareful when buying speakers... small speakers don't do 900watts as the box lists (@ 900watts, they fry up). when buying computers from shows, you might get decent deals, but then again, if u get a 48X burner, you are not gonna get a reputable brand...you are gonna get some bad generic brand burner...as well as OEM CPUs (some are actually retail), generic RAM, the cheapest mobo, etc. Some venders are actally reputable. The one I worked for did test everything before it was given to the customer and the warentee we offered was legit too. But becareful, esp. if the vendor is from NY. AND REMEMBER...CASH gets you better prices. These vendors like to pass the charge the credit card companies charge (~3%) over to the customer, which is actually illegal from the credit card companies. Keep that in mind...if you get charged more for using a crdit card...that charge is illegal and you can report the vendor to the credit card companies and their account will be terminated.

My only experience with computer shows is with .Tri-State Fairs, which occur in the NY/NJ area every week or so. I found their prices to be fairly decent compared to market, but generally poor relative to some hot deals found on Anandtech. I had purchased 2 systems there in the past, and I must say I had NEVER had a problem with customer service. Once I bought speakers from a merchant there, and they broke after the 30 day return period. Called them up anyway, and no problem -- got them replaced.

One bad experience at the show too -- got sold on 900MB CD-Rs which of course didnt even work as 700MB lol. The CD-writer didnt even recognise them as CDs (you know the pancake in the cd-drive errors).

As for the chinaman comment -- it doesn't matter if you feel that it was alright. I think enough people here (including myself) feel it was degrading. So the rest is up to you -- if you wanna "get along", use language that is more appropriate. If not, continue using this terminology, and nobody will put u in jail for it. Its a free country after all. But don't fool yourself into thinking this term is acceptable -- its not.

Ynot, thanks for the tip on the show. Much better organized than the Marketpro shows I usually attend. Some decent deals there as well. Picked up a Lian Li aluminum case for 80 dollars and also 2 sticks of Micron ddr3200 for 70 a piece. I know I could do as well with some online deals but it was nice to inspect the merchandise before buying.

I totally agree with you zveruga.

So you got one of those Lian Li cases. I thought of getting one too but I didn't really need it. Maybe next time.
I bought a UPS, an inverter for my SUV, some ink for 1.50 each, a case fan and some other little stuff.
I'm glad someone took this tip.

As do I. It is an unacceptable term. (I never argued otherwise.)

So, should I be offended if someone refers to me as an Englishman or, worse, an Anglo?

As I'm English (and a naturalized American), how can I be Anglo? The Angles came from Germany!

Ah--someone being facetious (I hope!). Not knowing you, I can't vouch for your knowledge of US history, and I will give you the benefit of the doubt because you are, after all, naturalised. A slight perusal of 19th-century US history, about 100 years after the Engrishmen were defeated, will enlighten you to the unfortunate oppression inflicted upon Chinese migrant labourers. It was during this period and thereafter that the term "Chinaman" was coined and oft used in a derogatory manner. In these modern times, I would expect that most people are educated enough to use more correct terms and lessen the chance of offending a fellow.

If, however, you do wish to persist in using "Chinaman," I politely request that you say "Chinese Man" instead. After all, in the few instance in which I recollect referring to a fellow from your motherland, I did not say "England Man."

Cheers!

I know! Some bast ard took that handle, so I had to settle for lame "1YellowPeril" (after obtaining Yellowperil's permission, of course).
As for the handle itself, it was an attempt at self-mockery
