I have AMD Athlon 2600 running on XP Home. System turns on and boots OKand runs normal. After 15 -20 minutes it just turns off. Fans stop, etc.

Power mamagement is set OK

Is there some type of a thermal sensor that could do this, such as the CPU running too hot?

SiSandra shows a fan speed of 1300 rpm for the CPU fan (2000 for the case fan) and warns of overheating possibility. CPU heat sink is really hot to the touch.

Any ideas on a fix would be much appreciated.

Are you using the stock 60mm AMD fan? If so, 1300 rpm is very slow. I don't imagine a Barton is a very hot chip, like a Palomino, but still 1300 rpm?

If you have another heatsink lying around it's not too hard to remove the fan from the 'sink and replace it with another. That, and try using another 3-pin fan-connector.

Yes, your computer will shut down if the CPU runs too hot. As suggested by Kalessian, try another HSF, and make sure that you use a quality thermal compound between the heat sink and the core.

Does that really help in all cases? I tried this once and all it did was slow down the CPU fan too!

If you can isoltate the problem enought to eliminate cpu heat as an issue..I would be looking at the power supply. I would though prehaps employ the suggestion that you direct an external fan onto the cpu/heatsink and see if the problem persists. Also does this shut down period time vary depending what is being run on the system..i.e. gaming vs. just web browsing or sitting idle?
