Computer slows when playing music CD

This seems like an easy-to-fix problem, but whenever I play a music CD on my CDRW or DVD drive (both on secondary IDE chain) my computer runs very slowly and the available system resources go way down. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
Here are the specs:
Asus P3B-F
Pentium 3@500mhz
192 megs of RAM
30 gig HD alone on the primary IDE
Creative DVDROM and HP CDRW on Secondary (DMA Checked)
NVidia TNT AGP Video Card
PCI Cards:
SB Live
Creative MPEG Decoder
Hauppage TV Card
Creative 56k Modem

this might seem totally illogical, but try setting one of the cd drives over on the harddrive IDE channel.......dunno if it'll help, but you could try

This indeed is very strange. When you play a Music CD, the music goes straight to the sound card through the little cable. Shouldn't use any resources at all. What proggie are you using to play the music ??

Some sound cards are indeed resource (CPU) hogs. I have a Diamond Monster Sound II MX300 which produces excellent A3D 3D sound. When I bought it (1 year ago) I knew it was perhaps the worst card with respect to CPU usage, but I wanted the sound. I haven't seen test of the SB Live but it sounds ( )like the same problem. You're probably like me, running too many apps at once.

Thanks for the suggestions. After tinkering with some things here and there and after some reboots and an installation of a new kickass Globalwin heatsink/fan, the resource-hogging problem has died down a bit.. Now, when I play a music CD, the only thing that slows is a game like Red Alert, but otherwise it runs smooth. Strange. Thanks for the help though.

nah, his specs aren't too far from mine, and I have no lag whatsoever when playing audio cd's.
