My onboard SATA port failed so I was forced to buy a pci SATA card to replace it. However after installation I cannot boot up to XP anymore. It is stuck on a reboot cycle. I will see the Windows XP splash screen then it would reboot. I couldn't even get into safe mode. I am pretty sure it has something to do with my SATA driver. But I can't even boot into safe mode to install the new driver. I even tried using Universal Recover by Acronis to force a SATA driver to the image, still no luck.

Any suggestions?

How do I disable the auto-restart thru the recovery console? So I can see what exactly is causing it to reboot.

What else can I do in this situation? Any suggestions?

thanks in advance

well, if the onboard sata ports are dead, that means the mobo is dying, take the card back and get a mobo, or have this one replaced by the manufacturer if it's under their warranty still.

So, how did you determine that it was a bad SATA port? Did you try another device on it? Did you try a new cable? Different power connector? If not, it's possible that you are reusing a defective component with the new card.

If you hit F8 to go to the bootup menu (like you would do enter safe mode), select disable automatic restart on error. I betcha the machine will return a bsod with either a stop 0x00000007d or stop 0x00000007e error. In this case, boot to the xp cd, and perform a repair install (not repair from the recovery console, skip past that option). If your XP cd has SP2 with it, you probably won't need a driver disc for your sata card - but I can't guarantee this, you may need a floppy disc with the sata drivers on them to do the repair install.

Or it could be a bad motherboard that needs replacing for anything to really work again.

Sometimes ports do go bad while the rest of the system is stable, but I think this is the exception to the rule. But what do I know? My own computer I'm using to type this with, I cannot hook a hard drive up to the second ide pata port. I don't know why, I can hook optical drives up to it all I want (and I do have a dvd burner on it), but hard drives just don't work. Other than that, the system is very stable.
