Computer Upgrade Maybe?

Usage: I game some, like to rip DVD's, into genealogy with a large database, lot of photos and music.

Current Specs: AMD X2-4800, DFI UT-CFX3200 Socket 939, 4 sticks 512 Corsair XMS 3200C2, OCZ GamerExtreme 700W, ATI x1900xtx.

O/S, Using XP Pro and probaly will continue but maybe should consider Vista?

Have a 150G Raptor I am going to put in, I also have a Diamond 3870x2 coming.

Would it make sense to upgrade? Considering a X38 or X48 Motherboard, looking at the ABit Quad GT, Asus Maximus Formula or maybe Gigabyte but I like what the Quad GT has.

Processor looking at Q9450 2.66 and I guess DDR2-800 Ram since the DDR3 seems to be overkill at this point.

Don't know if upgrading the mobo, ram, cpu is worth it or not? Should I upgrade now or wait and what about the selections? Really nothing I can about present system other can going to 1 or 2 GB sticks of ram instead of 4x512 but don't think that helps that much.

The Q9450 is overkill. I'd say you could do with a decent dual-core, not even a quad.

FWIW, Vista is really nice, is secure and a little more mature than a year ago. SP1 is out too.


What is it about your current system that is lacking? Your current specs are pretty good.

Nice balanced system. OK, it's not the latest-sweetest, but should have a lot of life still in it.

What's giving you the upgrade itch? Poor performance in a particular app, or just the desire for new gear (which, admittedly, most of us feel)?

Well, I guess I just felt since mine is 2+ years old, I would get a huge benefit by upgrading. In the event I ran Vista I didn't think my system was the best.

Maybe I just got the itch!! But if you folks think I still have some good life left then I will just stick with what I have. I haven't got the 3870x2 yet, so I don't know how much improvement that will bring but will find out in a couple of days.
