Computer way too slow

I've been having problems with my computer the past few weeks. The internet is slow as hell, it takes forever to load a webpage and is taking days to download a game off steam. I have a Cisco E1000 N router and I just bought the AE1000 wireless N adapter but it hasn't speed anything up. I have Avira, Malwarebytes, ccleaner and none have shown any problems I've run disk defrag; I've updated drives; I have 100 GBs free on my 500 GBs HD.

I have no idea what is causing this problem or how I can fix it. Anyone have any ideas or anything I can run to determine if there is a specific problem?

Also I have 2 4GBs of RAM but my computer is only reading 1 of them. Can my computer process both?

Are you saying your computer is slow or your internet connection is slow.

What kind of internet connection do you have?
Have you done a speed-test?
Have you done a speed-test without the router?
What version of Windows are you using?

I guess the computer overall is working okay even though I just had Crysis and Assassins Creed 2 both crash on me....but the internet is messed up

Things we're working okay when I had Vista and a wireless G router I got from TimeWarner. Then I switched to a faster wireless N router (Cisco linksys) and I was told I needed to upgrade my wireless adapter to N to match up the signals for a better connection. I then upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit. And the connection was slower, but in the past week or 2 its been unbearable.

I ran a speed test and got this back.

Since you have TimeWarner, run this speedtest instead.

Do you have standard roadrunner or lite? The speeds you posted are equivalent to dial up service.

I have standard roadrunner. But something had to have changed somewhat recently because it was never this slow. This is what I got when I ran that test.

Download Speed: 983 kbps (122.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 293 kbps (36.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

So it appears your getting 1/10th of the speed you should be getting and this is why the internet seems slow overall. Try the speedtest again without the router and if the speeds are the same, call them and find out if there is an area issue or something a service tech can help you resolve.

I directly connected my computer instead of the wireless adapter...but there's no change. My roommate said his has been a little slow so I might just have to give TW a call and hope that its something they can fix.

You might try pchelpforum.com - they have specific tests and analysis they will do for you if you follow their instructions carefully.
