-------------------------------------------
first i would like to thank you all a lot for helping me solve this problem

i figured out what was wrong, i had a screw in too tightly that was pushing the mobo inward and that screw was right next to the power supply connection that goes into the mobo so i am guessing that is what was preventing the mobo from recieving power

once again...thank you all for helping me
and the answer to your question mechBgon it is a bios 1002 i just checked and the green light on the mobo was still on after everything stopped spinning ...thank you for asking

but... i have another problem...if anyone knows anything about it
the fans spin, everything is connected...but something is still wrong

if i just connect the power to the hard drives or the dvdburner it behaves as it should, but once i plug in the ide cable to the motherboard, they do not turn on as if they do not exist

once again...power on and no ide connection it works like it should
connecting ide makes the dvdburner nor the hard drives work
the video card works, but if i connect the monitor to it, no output

any ideas..anybody? please?
thank you all in advance

----------------------------------------------------------------------end of edit

i just got some brand new parts put them together, and the computer does not start up. I know what i am doing, but i am all out of ideas on how to fix this.

when i press the power button the power supply fan turns on and then stops spinning after about 1/2 a second, i know its not the connection from the case because placing the jumpers in the power switch portion of the mobo doesnt change anything.

i tried disconnecting everything and just having the mobo, cpu, ram and vid card...same problem

the power supply i know should work cuz the light on my mobo says i have power

i have a MB ASUS P4S800D-E DELUXE
CPU P4/3.0EGHz 800M 478P/1MB HT RT
DDRAM 512MB|64X64 PC-3200B 8T CRUCIAL
and a ati 9800 128mb vid card

the computer does nothing, no other fan working, when trying to turn it on, and i dont know what to do

does anyone have any suggestions? please

I'm guessing the problem is the motherboard. Most likely because you don't have something hooked up right, fans are the most common culprit.

Do you have any spare parts lying around that you could try to help narrow down the problem?

i have a laptop and an old AT (as opposed to ATX) computer to play with but i dont think that would help

i was thinking it is the motherboard too, but the problem is it lights up (there is a green light on it, when power is flowing to it, it turns on) so i was not sure it is the mobo...the cpu fan is in the right place and i am 90% sure the cpu is stuck in the right way w/ the heatsink and the fan on top of it

I had the same problem as you a few years ago. The cause was the motherboard being grounded to the motherboard tray. I hadnt put plastic washers on all the standoffs and some of them were touching the bottom of the case. My mobo had the power light on, and stuff would spin up for an instant but then nothing. One other strange thing was that the motherboard seemd to be stuck to the case, i guess through some kind of magnetism. Anyway you should check to make sure all the standoffs have plastic washers on them, or check for any other place the mobo could be grounded.

1. Verify with the manufacturer that the motherboard pins are properly labelled. If the motherboard silkscreen labels are incorrect, then what you think are the power-switch-pins may be reset-switch-pins etc...

2. The problem could be your power-switch. Instead of using the case-connectors to the motherboard, try using a small screwdriver and short the pins manually (this is what a momentary switch does anyway, temporarily make an electrical connection). BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL about which pins you're shorting.

I was installing an Asus board and the motherboard was mis-labelled in regards to the case connectors. Took me an hour searching the pins to find the power-switch pair. Got sparks on one occasion with no permanent damage (but a lot of expletives).

Good luck.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I ended up doing a variety of things, but here are some that you might consider.

1) I know it's probably obvious, but double check that you're PS is set to 120V instead of 230V. I have heard of people with the incorrect voltage settings and, of course, this caused some problems.

2) Remove the CMOS battery or use the jumper short (if so equipped) to clear the BIOS. This worked for me when I was assembling all new parts.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Answer me this: after the computer runs its fans for 1/2 second and shuts down again, does the green light on the motherboard go out, or does it stay on?

While we're at it, look at the little BIOS chip. Asus puts a sticker on them that tells what BIOS it comes with. Does it say 1002 or later? There might be several numbers, look for one starting with 100_. BIOS revision 1002 is required to run a 3.0E Prescott-core Pentium4 on the P4S800D-E Deluxe, according to Asus, so you might need to find a non-Prescott processor to use for a BIOS update if you don't have at least 1002.

Might be a silly thing but have you double checked that the drives are set in correct order? i.e. Master & Slave, I really do not advise to use Cable Select as from experience its not good ¬_¬ also are you runing both of the drives from the same IDE channel? if so try runing them on seperate ones (so its 1 cable going to the HDD and a seperate cable for DVD drive) It might be that just you current configuration does not like being that way

Based on your new info, let me ask whether you mounted your motherboard on standoffs as shown in the photos here. If not, there's your root problem.

mechBgon: i have mounted my mobo on the standoffs and it is still the same problem, hard drives and dvdburner turns on w/o the ide cable and it doesnt turn on w/ the ide cable connected even when it is one drive at a time

edit:
i just realized that the third ide port that is supposed to be used for RAID (next to the floppy connector, when i connect the hard drive to that, it works, but not the other 2 that are the main ones, i thought it was something w/ the screw next to it, but it was not, so i am out of ideas

Try a brand-new, flat, boring, 80-wire IDE cable. The end connector that's colored (typically blue), and that's separated more from the other two connectors, should be plugged into the motherboard. The first drive should be jumpered as Master and plugged into the opposite end (typically black connector) and the next drive should be jumpered as Slave and plugged into the middle connector (typically grey). Don't have two masters on one cable, or two slaves either (duh).

If that isn't getting you anywhere, it could be your computer just doesn't like you or maybe one of the two drives is faulty. Try one drive at a time, in that case.

And to recap: your board has standoffs keeping it away from the case? And you checked to ensure there is one standoff for each of the nine holes in the motherboard, and no standoffs anywhere that the mobo does not have a hole? Because a stray standoff shorting out your IDE connectors from underneath would certainly explain the symptoms here. :Q
