Computer will not shut down! ....Instead it restarts

I have Windows XP on my computer and at first it didn't do it, it started about a month ago. Whenever I tell my computer to shut down it restarts. To turn it off I need to press the power button while it's coming back up.

Any ideas?

I built the computer myself. It's a Asus A7pro with a duron 650 Mhz processor. I have no idea what the problem is with(OS, Hardware).

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Yes, I have had this problem b4. Do a Windows update. I can't remember which one it was, but it fixed it. Damn thing kept trying to restart on me even when I pressed the power button to turn it off on POST. Had to unplug. Something about the Shutdown process. I wish I could tell you exactly what fixed ti, but it's been awile. I think I did a BIOS update too.

Open Regedit and look for this key:


Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\
CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: PowerdownAfterShutdown

Value Data: (0 = reboot, 1 = power down)


It should be set to 1

Ok, so the registry thing didn't fix it.

I told my computer not to automatically restart on failures and now when it shuts down right before it would normally turn off I get a BSOD and the message is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

So, I guess that is what is causing all my shutting down problems. But, WTF! does that mean.

Anyone have any clue what IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL means?

Id start pulling PCI cards one at a time and see if you have an IRQ or driver issue. XP assigns virtual IRQ so that usually isnt a problem, but there are a few pieces of hardware that may cause it. Another alternative is to disable items in Device manager one at a time to see if you can isolate the problem part/driver. Im assuming you have done all the XP updates for hardware compatibility.
