Computer won't boot

The other day after I got home from a LAN party, I started up my computer. It seemed to be booting fine until it got stuck at the Windows load screen. It didn't freeze, the progress bar kept moving. I waited and waited for about a half an hour just to make sure there wasn't any problems. I rebooted, got the same thing. I opened up my comp and checked the hard drive connections, and tried to boot again. This time the fans turned on and stuff, but the monitor didn't turn on.

I think "OH CRAP! MY VIDEO CARD!" I had a 6600GT from my brother's computer that I used to see if my video card was the problem, the 6600GT didn't work either. It's not the video card that broke. I re-sat the CPU, still didn't work. I re-connected all of the mobo power cables, still didn't work. I tried RAM that is definitely working, it still didn't work. I don't know what is causing this problem. Is it the motherboard or CPU? I was thinking the motherboard because I think I've gotten into the BIOS before without the CPU in, but then again I could be wrong.

Thanks for any help!

HAve you tried to boot into safe mode or last known good config?

Press f8 while it's booting to get the options to select.

Its not your hardware its a software issue. Ive seen iit with some viruses which you could have picked up on the LAN network. IT happened ot me and som freinds when hsoting a LAN party. Try getting into safe mode and if you isntalled anything there uninstall ti, if you have a restore point form before it try that too.

Good luck

No I don't think I explained it very well... My monitor isn't getting a signal from the PC now. It started out with it hanging at Windows load, but now I don't even see the BIOS loading or anything. When I power on my computer I just see black on my monitor... it doesn't even come out of sleep mode like it should. I've tried 3 different monitors, and NONE of them worked so that's not the problem either.

I agree with FNC - lan party is a great place to get really nasty virus
the way to check quickly is to install another HDD (WITH THE ORIGINAL NOT CONNECTED TO POWER!!!)
dont worry about wrong drivers - just boot into safe mode.
of course, all that transportation might have loosened something.

Check the video card for slipping out of the agp slot. Happens all the time when transporting comptuers and there is no agp lock on it. Now when you say you rmonitor does not turn on, does it not work with windows or does itnever turn on and you can not even see the post in the begginign. If so I defently think you vid card migh tbe loose. Other wise if its just windows, i woudl sugest somthing along the lines of Bozo, , jsut inverted, find another comptuer that is operatable, make sure the virus scanner is on it and up to date then add this hardrive to the chain, make sure one is master and the other is slave then start it up, it will boot to that pcs hardrive (not the messed up one) then once windows is booted tell your virus scanner to scan the Hardrive , full scan and see if it find anything, that will show you if you have a virus. BUT MAKE SAURE YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS IS UP TO DATE AND THE SCANNER IS RUNNIGN BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE SECOND HARDRIVE.

i understand the monitor issue. if you are using parallel ata hard drive or drives, then you probably put the harddrive in the secondary ide port as a slave setting. maybe master. you just need to set your harddrive in the primary ide port. that should fix the problem

Ok I still don't think you guys understand...

I've taken my computer completely apart to remove the HSF (had to unscrew from the back) which means I've redone every single connection. I've tried running with just the CPU, RAM, and vid card and still had the same problem.

When I say that the monitor doesn't get a signal from the computer, I mean that it doesn't react at ALL from the time I press the power button. I don't hear the computer beep at startup, either.

I've tried resetting the BIOS (CMOS, I guess that's the same... removing the battery). No luck. And yes the fans come on, I haven't checked to see whether or not they'll still come on if they're plugged into the motherboard (I have a fan controller which I plug all my fans into).

even your cpu fan????????? I HOPE NOTTT!! as you may turn the fan on the cpu to low which causes the cpu to over heat then burnout????

Yes even my CPU fan. I have it running at a constant 1400 RPM, even while overclocked (I never kept it overclocked, because I ran into issues with OCing and my SATA bus) it ran at 39C. I have a HUGE HSF, I definitely didn't run into any heat problems.

Try your hardware in another pc to see if it is working. cpu/vc/ram if you have access to one. Sounds like a motherboard if the above mentioned doesnt work in another sys.

And dont rule out your power supply, you may want to swap out power supplies first as that is a easy and quick thing to check.

Have you tried a new monitor. It might be your mobo was damaged or the port to your monitor was somehow messed up in transport. Windows might hang when it tries to detect your monitor if there was a problem, I don't know. Try flashing bios.

I agree with steven. You need to test all your parts in another computer, start with the power supply, then ram and video card, as those are the most easiest, the hardest would eb the motherbaord and cpu as they are not all compatible with every other computer especially Penitum... I hate those guys so much for shaning a socket everytime they come out with 200 MHZ faster. anywas enough hatefullness. TEst out every single part.

I've tried the PSU, RAM, and vid card in a different system and they all worked fine. I don't have another system with an S939 processor, so I can't test out the CPU/mobo.

What a waste of bandwidth.

I still would test a differnt power supply in your system to make sure that your ps was generating enough power to run your setup, if you havent done so already.
Otherwise that pretty much narrows it down to your cpu/motherboard it may be worth it to take it to a pc shope to see of they would be willing to test the combo for you. May be that you could RMA one and get a 50% chance of picking the right part the first time. My guess would be the motherboard

Have you asked any of the other people at the lan party if they have had this problem? If they have, then it is 99% likely that it is a virus.
