So my mum phones me today and says her computer broke. Usually this means her mouse is unplugged or something but this time it wont even get to the BIOS. She said she was just playing a game (my mum plays PC games!) and it hard locked. Rebooted and it wont even get to the BIOS.
The Scottish government gave out free computers to loads of people last year to get them connected to the net (and a years free 56k) even though our family must have near 10 working computers now. The computer is a Compaq Evo D300V. Celeron 1.2GHz with a horrible OEM mobo and a horrible BIOS that seems to be purely designed to allow mass network installations. I told her to reset the BIOS but she couldn't see any jumpers to do so (I bet there are actually no jumpers to do so) so she just took the battery out and swapped it with my brothers. The battery is not the problem.
I think it has to be the mobo or cpu for sure. The good news is everyone nearby received the same computer from the government. The bad news none of them would ever let anyone take one apart to swap parts. My mum wants her computer working NOW and even went and stole my brothers out of his room. She said go ahead and order a new mobo and cpu but we (me and my dad) don't want to spend too much since my dad has been building a new computer for himself behind her back and only needs a mobo now.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be? Whether it's cpu or mobo or both? If it's both then what's the best <£100 mobo and cpu sdram combination these days?

She had a K6-3 450 before her free Celeron and the K6-3 just died overnight when my dad was using it. I swear to god she's cursed.
